Police in Texas have identified a minor who livestreamed herself putting a small dog inside a clothes dryer and then turning it on.
The video shows a girl saying she was going to put the dog "back in the dryer." She then grabs a white dog, puts it in the dryer, screams and closes the door. After turning the dryer on, the girl laughs and claps while the machine runs for about six seconds.
She continues laughing after opening the door. The dog frantically climbs out of the dryer and then runs off-frame. The girl approaches the dog, who appears to hide under a table. She laughs while saying sorry.
The video has been video more than 5 million times.

(16,616 posts)More and more people in our society seem incapable of compassion for others. I worry that we're actually evolving in this direction because it's too painful to experience empathy in a world where there's so much suffering.
Animal abuse is also one of three factors behaviorists see frequently in people who go on to kill other people (the other factors are arson and bedwetting beyond a certain age).

I spend a good deal of time giving attention to my granddaughters and attempting to wean them from the constant selfie-self agrandisement and toxic vanity.

(3,803 posts)It's called the MacDonald triad, and it started with a paper published back in 1963. More recent studies find that bedwetting should not be lumped in with cruelty to animals and other destructive behavior like arson.
Please do not propagate the myth that bedwetting is a sign that somebody is destined to be a monster. Five percent of 10 year-olds still wet the bed.

(28,125 posts)compassion and empathy?
Is there *any* hope for that? What's missing?
So glad my son was never capable of such horrid, cruel, inhumane behavior. I would have been so enraged that I'd have beaten the living crap out of him had he done something like this.
Yrs ago I got into an argument with my nephew about compassion: he said it has to be taught; I maintained it's innate. Opinions?

(11,738 posts)Unless there is some structural damage (brain damage) affecting certain centers of processing, empathy is learned socially.
Attachment Theory has some decent research on brain development and learning as infants. Attachment which is the bond between infant and care giver (typically mother, or parent, or surrogate) is critical in the development of trust and the ability of people to form meaningful relationships in adulthood.
