Seeking recommendation for long distance phone company

I just had to cancel my Working Assets / Credo account. They screwed me up. Forgot to bill me all year, then sent me to collections without advance notice. Very bad and illegal. They are crediting me for my balance, but I don't want to deal with them any more.

Recommendations appreciated - especially based on political leanings / ethics (i.e., who owns them, etc.)

Thanks!

I use my cell and T-Moble for everything, cut out the land line years ago.

mobile/cell phone service that I know of. That's the route we took years ago. Had land line for internet until we didn't even need that.

Is there a reason why you want a land line?

I was alone and tried to call an ambulance. Discovered that my Internet was down. VOiP "landline" depends on Internet. I never use my cell, but it was the only thing working. Of course I had no idea how to call 911 on it. So I fumbled around for 20 scary minutes and finally called the police. I was lucky that my cell actually worked as my town (and house) have lots of dead zones. So it's not entirely reliable. A good old copper landline would have given me a lot of protection and comfort.

Should have explained.

Use internet for cell calls now (finally have internet at home - satellite). Really bad lag time and limited options.

33 dollars a year for service after a cost of around 35 bucks for their equipment/gadget. It's a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) system. I hook their equipment up to my router and phone setup and use a setup with a standard landline phone and two cordless phones hooked up together. It comes with caller ID and phone messaging and takes care of my needs.
