Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow many times have we heard---or even quoted---that old cliche: "'Assume' makes an ASS out of
U and ME"? Maybe we should have questioned what assumptions are inherent in our laws, customs and even our Constitution.
We assumed that anyone who is not mentally ill would be too embarrassed and ashamed to tell transparent lie after transparent lie. Trump's verified lies since his "inauguration" recently topped 12,000 and I have yet to see so much as a mild blush of shame.
We assumed that anyone willing to go through the ordeal of campaigning for POTUS does so primarily because they believe they can improve our nation and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. We did not even consider the profit motive in seeking the power of the White House.
We assumed that, while most of us make at least our share of mistakes, people genuinely try to "do the right thing". It did not cross our minds that someone to whom "right" and "wrong" are meaningless could ever sit behind the Resolute Desk.
We assumed that no POTUS would ever take the word of an ex-KGB Russian thug over the consensus assessment of all US intelligence agencies. We neglected to consider "kompromat".
We assumed that if ever a totally corrupt, amoral and traitorous boob were to somehow become POTUS, he or she would be swiftly impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate. We overestimated Mitch McConnell.
When decent Americans are again in control, perhaps we need to enact statutory "fall back" plans b, c and d in anticipation of a future electoral brain fart when our assumptions once again make asses of us.

This IS America. The ugly side thats always been here. Trump is the gauche rich man, stumbling his way through the political landscape sucking all the oxygen out of the room, as he said he would do.
