(17,622 posts)If I can only have one, I'd pick the presidency.
While winning the Senate but not the presidency would allow us to slow the confirmation of more Trumpian judges, it won't allow us to do much else since Trump could veto most of our legislative agenda.

(68,582 posts)priority. The Senate is a real long shot too.
Have we learned nothing? The Senate majority leader has the president by the ... you fill in here. He turns the HoR into a useless talking shop. She controls who gets appointed to cabinet offices and the judiciary. No bill makes its way to the president unless the majority leader has allowed it to come to a vote.
A charismatic, publicity-seeking Senate majority leader would now be very dangerous. We need to fix this broken system but that's what's developed.
The majority leader lacks military and prosecutorial power, but those are (supposedly) limited in the president's hands anyway.
I'd kinda like to see Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren as majority leader. Could be fun.

(15,423 posts)If we win the Senate, it will most certainly be Majority Leader Schumer. Sure, he'll stall Trump judges, and pass some good bills with Pelosi, but Trump would veto them. Plus even if you have (let's say) President Biden and Mitch, no more awful executive orders and being the world's embarrassment.
So if I can have one and only one, I'd prefer the presidency.

(16,646 posts)30% of the population elects more than 50% of the senate. I'm not sure how achievable this is. Worse, by 2040 70% of the population is predicted to live in just 15 states. Which means that 70% of the senate will be elected by 30% of the population. That doesn't bode well for the "people" to take control of the senate.

(6,916 posts)Win the Senate in 2020
Make DC and PR states (if they want it); that helps a lot.

(16,646 posts)30% of the senate isn't going to change much by adding 2 states to the Union. It is the fatal flaw of the constitution. It is our doom.

(6,916 posts)What I really want is to merge all the red states with few people admitted in the 1880s to pack the Senate. N and S Dakota were admitted as two states to pack the Senate.
On second thought, maybe we should do that with DC. Two states?!

(2,785 posts)There is the Virgin Islands,Guam,American Somoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. Add all of those territories in addition to Puerto Rico and it will make a huge difference in the Senate.

(156 posts)cuz that's the way it was set up. They didn't want the capital to be controlled by any state. As for PR they can't get enough turnout to decide one way or another.

(6,916 posts)Youre telling Democrats that its not possible to make DC a state and PR a state. Thats not only false, its what the right says because theyre afraid of making DC a state.
DCs govt has answered your question.
And PR could do it now if they wanted.

(11,098 posts)It is almost as important as winning the presidency. If the Democrats control the House and Senate but not the presidency, the result is gridlock but with Trump continuing to alienate the world AND Trump will continue to appoint federal judges - and may be a SCOTUS justice. If a Democrat is President but the Repubs hold the Senate, the result is gridlock but we can rebuild respect in the world. While I suspect Moscow Mitch would refuse to confirm federal judges for four years, at least there would be no more Trump appointees.
Fortunately, we do not have to choose. We need to win both.

We hold both houses and Trump, if by some miracle, wins, we broil him on a spot for 4 years.
When I saw that he has lost the Sturgis crowd, truckers, farmers, educated white guys, and women across demographics I realized we have him down. When you have em down it is time to start kicking.

(42,704 posts)Merely winning the Senate won't give us the votes needed to override Trump's vetoes of that legislation.
And how do you propose to constitutionally "fix" Fox or fix CU legislatively?

(22,578 posts)This election is going to be about turnout and if the Left is not motivated to turn out and vote with no excuses in 2020, they never will.
Republicans tend to vote like it's their duty.
We need to get out and vote like the future of the country is at stake because it is.

(11,631 posts)I feel the presidency is most important provided we hold the House. But this is just an academic question. The Senate seems to be such a further reach at this point with Trump's perpetually low polling and the number of traditionally pink red states you'd have to win to take control of the senate... if we do get the senate that means we got a big blue wave election and Trump is toast anyway. I don't think the opposite is necessarily true... we can beat Trump just with a few thousand votes more in the upper midwest.
