Did anybody wonder WHY Mitt's Grandparents were in Mexico??

'George'Romney's grandparents were polygamous Mormons who fled the United States with their children owing to the federal government's prosecution of polygamy.[1][2] His maternal grandfather was Helaman Pratt (1846–1909), who presided over the Mormon mission in Mexico City before moving to the Mexican state of Chihuahua and who was the son of original Mormon apostle Parley P. Pratt (1807–1857).[2][3][4] In the 1920s, Romney's uncle Rey L. Pratt (1878–1931) played a major role in the preservation and expansion of the Mormon presence in Mexico and in its introduction to South America.[5] A more distant kinsman was George Romney (1734–1802), a noted portrait painter in Britain during the last quarter of the 18th century.[6]

THAT my friends, is the counter story.

Mexico because of a 'revolution'. I do know that I immediately said, "Bullshit". Sorry. The Mexico re-location was glossed over for sure.

But not one bit of all that fleeing around can be realistically tweaked into 'my grandfather immigrated here from Mexico' and THEY WERE IN MEXICO SO THAT THEY COULD CONTINUE THEIR POLYGAMIST LIFESTYLE UNHASSLED.

Doesn't that kind of change the tone of Mitt's story a tad? I mean, all anybody has to say is "Why were your grandparents in Mexico?"

when Utah wanted to be admitted to the Union as a state, it was told there were conditions, one of them being the discontinuation of polygamy. LDS officials wanted statehood, so they agreed. And viola, as they say - the Prophet, Seer and Revelator in office at the time had a revelation that polygamy was no longer God's law or permitted. Many Mormons were outraged, having been taught for many years prior to that polygamy was God's ordained way to live. From what I remember reading there was quite an uproar in LDS circles, but the pro-statehood, anti-polygamy forces won out eventually. Some families, like Mitt's, moved to Mexico so they could continue to practice polygamy. Others went underground, living in plain sight.

Years ago my mom, in a demon station of amazing bravery, one summer loaded my 15 year old self and a girl friend in the station wagon and drove from New Jersey to California and back. While in Utah we stopped for the night in a small town - the proverbial one stop lighter - because there was an overlook there from which you could look out across the desert and see the curvature of the earth. After dinner we went to the local Dairy Queen for dessert. We sat in the car, windows down to catch the cooling breeze, eating our ice cream and people watching. 2 huge vans pulled in and lots of children, several women and one man got out. It was obvious almost immediately that it was a polygamous family. All the children addressed the man as father or dad. In equal parts, the kids addressed one of the women as mom and the others as Aunt. The women all addressed the man using normal marital terms of endearment (mostly dear if memory serves). He paid for everyone's ice cream, they ate quickly and returned to the cars. It was interesting.

...most of America would be oh-so UNimpressed with it.

They were in Mexico because of their multiple concubines (ie: "wives&quot that they refused to give up due to their Mormon religion (makes you think about Mitt's bassackwards misogynist attitudes towards women - or at least it SHOULD). They faced prosecution/prison if they stayed.

That simple.

This is something WE may have known, at least I have heard about it. But I have friends who LITERALLY said that they just realized the RNC was going on YESTERDAY when they went to watch some show they like and couldn't get it. We think that everybody is paying attention because WE are paying attention. We need to recycle stories we got bored with two weeks ago, because most everybody else is just now looking up to see what is going on.

As far I have been able to research, Rmoney's grandparents were not polygamous.

Romney's father, George Romney, was not born in the USA but still ran for President. Nobody bothered about it because he was always a long shot.

However, it was his grandparents who lived in Mexico. They lost their property in the Mexican revolution and returned to the US in 1912.

I guess, someone could ask him if he knew both or either of his paternal great-grandmothers.

the government saved their asses financially...

“My dad’s dad was not a polygamist. My dad grew up in a family with a mom and a dad and a few brothers and one sister,” he said. “They lived in Mexico and lived a very nice life there from what I understand and then when he was , I think five or six years old there was a revolution in Mexico. They escaped. I believe they went to El Paso first, and were helped by the government to get on their feet and then his dad went around the country, Los Angeles, I think Idaho, Utah, went broke more than once. My dad had a very tough upbringing.”

Then came the reverse FROM Mexico? How come he still has a large number of cousins of degrees still in a colony in Mexico. They were interviewed on Univision a few months go, all looking just like him yet speaking all Spanish. They said they have never had contact with him but would welcome it.
