(6,624 posts)No gun there.

(51,557 posts)It is not clear what that thing on his hip is, but the report was he was armed. You weren't there.
If you want to downplay this as "just" assholery, that is your right, Straw Man, and I have the right to make my assessment.
Straw Man
(6,624 posts)It is only the conjecture of some viewers of the video. None of the eyewitness reports refer to his being armed.
No, I wasn't there, nor were you. None of the people who were there reported a weapon.

(12,618 posts)Look at what happens when we allow people to openly carry guns. Militia protecting terrorists in Charlottesville. Militia in Oregon threatening state representatives. Racist assholes in the post office being abusive.
An armed society is not a polite society. It's a recipe for fascism, racism, crime, and tyranny.

(8 posts)It's against the law to carry a firearm into a post office. It is posted inside.

(81,492 posts)(a) Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility), or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both.

(g) As used in this section:
(1) The term Federal facility means a building or part thereof owned or leased by the Federal Government, where Federal employees are regularly present for the purpose of performing their official duties.

(18,655 posts)is the subsection (d) in the law you cited.
It is at odds with the posted notice of no firearms may be carried, yet I am not aware of anyone ever having been arrested for ignoring the posted notice. I believe that is due to the subsection (d) exception to prohibition on carry.

(6,624 posts)(1) the lawful performance of official duties by an officer, agent, or employee of the United States, a State, or a political subdivision thereof, who is authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of any violation of law;
(2) the possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon by a Federal official or a member of the Armed Forces if such possession is authorized by law; or
(3) the lawful carrying of firearms or other dangerous weapons in a Federal facility incident to hunting or other lawful purposes.

Subsection (d)(1) is for law enforcement; (d)(2) is for military or other armed Feds; (d)(3) refers to hunting on Federal land. Are you suggesting that any one of those applies here? On what evidence?

(18,655 posts)Subsection (d) 3
I have seen the argument put forth that legal carry falls under "other lawful purpose" and is an exception to the prohibition on firearms in a Post Office.
That said, I am not aware of any court rulings on the issue. People I know who carry leave their firearms outside when doing business at the Post Office. No one wants to be the test case.
Straw Man
(6,624 posts)... about "lawful purposes," but as you've said, no one wants to be the test case. It does seem somewhat illogical to create a prohibition that only applies to something that is already illegal, i.e. carrying for an "unlawful" purpose. The fact that hunting is specifically listed seems to suggest that this exemption was intended for Federal wilderness lands and not the Post Office.

And then will no longer legally be able to own a gun!

(22,976 posts)It wont, of course. But WTF ever happened to common fucking sense? Why is this clearly unbalanced individual granted the right to carry a death-dealing weapon IN PUBLIC, where he will have repeated encounters with others who will enrage his crazed redneck sensibilities?
I read where this cretin had an earlier, similar altercation. Hes going to keep doing this. At some point, simply because its there, that weapon will be used when he hits peak rage. Then Republicans will pivot to a mental illness problem, rather than a gun problem.
But heres the thing: guns and crazy go together like Velcro and loose thread. They attract one another. The public deserves UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS at the very least.

(6,624 posts)When he turns at 0:14, you can see that it's uniformly square. If that's a handgun grip, it's the widest one I've ever seen.
The Post Office is one place that's absolutely off limits for carry. Everyone knows it, and they're all well posted. The man is an abusive, racist asshole, but he's not armed -- at least not openly.
The news link in Post #2 makes no mention of a weapon. Apparently none of the eyewitnesses saw one. I'd trust their perceptions more than I'd trust what random people think they see on an online video.
