President Trump is used to going to gatherings of world leaders and throwing his weight around even if to no other end than making his counterparts squirm and cater to him. But on Sunday, he found himself on his heels and fumbling throughout much of the first day of the Group of Seven summit in Biarritz, France.
He began by creating his own problems. When asked whether he was having second thoughts about escalating the trade war, he responded in the affirmative. Yeah, sure. Why not? he said, adding: I have second thoughts about everything. Press secretary Stephanie Grisham assured that Trumps only regret was not raising the tariffs on Chinese imports higher. But Trump was actually asked that question three times by different reporters, and he allowed the premise each time.
Trump assured us that world leaders were not pressuring him to get out of the trade war. Yet just moments later, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson gently urged him to de-escalate in a rare face-to-face plea from a world leader to Trump. Look, I just want to say I congratulate the president on everything that the American economy is achieving. Its fantastic to see that, Johnson said. But : Were in favor of trade peace on the whole, and dialing it down if we can. Johnson added: We dont like tariffs, on the whole.
Trump appeared with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to announce a beautiful trade deal with Japan. When Trump repeatedly urged him to talk about Japan buying hundreds of millions of dollars of corn Abe downgraded it to the potential purchase of American corn and emphasized this will be done by the Japanese private sector. Prime Minister Abe added, We still have remaining work that has to be done at the working level before any deal is done.

Not once in my 50 years of voting have I thought a president would refuse to leave if voted out. This one, it would not surprise me.
Although I think the official vote will give him a 2nd term. It won't be legitimate. But the winner is who controls the count.

(19,204 posts)No one could possibly sleep through the horrific shit-show Trump has wrought. They just don't care. The rich got yet another tax cut, environmental regulations have been almost totally scrapped, they picked up two Supreme Court Justices, and the money keeps rolling in from wealthy Americans and their "friends" from Russia. All is well in GOP world. Sure, Trump's tariffs are a bit problematic for them, but they'll have a talk with the moron before the 2020 elections and he'll miraculously come up with a answer for the China problem.
They're not sleeping, they just don't give a shit about our country or the people in it. That's my take on it anyway.

(4,341 posts)So they attribute the good economy to him when he has nothing to do about the good, he inherited a good economy from Obama and he is destroying it. There will be recession by the end of 2019, that is my prediction.

(17,931 posts)It's a private sector issue anyway, and the US has not proven a reliable trading partner in recent years. Who they hell knows what tariff boy is going to do next, or if the US electorate collectively has any fucking sense? If I were a Japanese corn buyer, if there is such a thing, I'd be willing to trade a significant amount of price for stability.
