replacement with drones. Seems sad, but what are your thoughts on this?

He wrote "Fire Season," about his experiences in a fire lookout in New Mexico's Gila NF. Toward the end, he lamented the lack of human judgement in a system that relies on automation. I agree. But these are bad times for rational fire management decisions.
