My taste buds appreciate immigrants

I grew up in the Midwest, pretty much meat and potatoes kind of fare. A few family recipes going back to Europe. I was just thinking tonight I probably had only eaten a variety of 30 meals before I was a teenager. There was a Mexican restaurant in a town not too far away, my high school Spanish class took a field trip there. As I got older and moved around tried a few new things as I got into my twenties. And of course the things I tried were the americanized version.

I tried a Korean BBQ place last week and really liked it. None in my town yet but I was looking online and found a sushi place that had pictures of their menu. The thing that I’d tried and really liked I believe is called a bepmipip bowl or something like that. I called to order it, got takeout and was pretty sure the Japanese woman on the phone wasn’t getting what I wanted but figured what the hell im sure whatever it is will be good. I was right, I have no idea what I ended up with but it was great. It’s just nice to be able to try a variety of dishes.

Depression.

I’m kind of a picky eater, but generally find something at any ethnic reasturant. Once I find that something, I pretty much stick with it. But, yeah, the variety nowadays is quite refreshing.

or chow mein were considered a bit exotic, we now have restaurants featuring the cuisines of Vietnam, Peru, Afghanistan, Tibet (I've eaten yak meat!), Ethiopia, Thailand, Mexico (including many taco trucks), Korea, Venezuela (arepas!), China, Sweden, Germany, Russia, India, Japan, Spain, Turkey, Nepal, Morocco, Malaya, Greece, Israel, and probably others I haven't thought of. I think it really got going after the Vietnam war was over and a lot of Vietnamese refugees ended up here and opened restaurants, which got people more interested in and welcoming of foreign cuisines. You can always find something interesting to eat now.
