A Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, is capturing national attention for putting up a sign that reads on one side, "A black vote for Trump is mental illness." The other side of the sign displays another message: "A white vote for Trump is pure racism.

It would be more apropos to state that "A Black Congregant in a Baptist Church is Mental Illness!"

Only those who belong to the Southern Baptist Convention have that mentality and the Convention has been fighting about it for years those who want the Church to move forwatd seem to have won the battle at this time ousting the old Leader, who was accused of molestation.
There are many good black Baptist Churches but bigoted white people have put a blight on the Baptist name.

(6,917 posts)Thats another issue. The issue is a church posting a political sign in favor or against a political candidate. As much as I think the message does not adequately state all the reasons people of God should have for opposing Trump, it is not proper for a tax-exempt church.

(28,208 posts)given that their history was to promote slavery and the Booker T. Washington position.
It just goes to show how institutional norms only take one generation to affirm themselves in a society.
I quickly read your last post, which didn't make sense as the SBC was formed around 15 years after the Slave Uprisings. Upon reread, I see that I made a mistake.

(6,917 posts)The relationship between Baptists and African-Americans seems out-of-place. And support by religious people for someone they profess to be profoundly irreligious is beyond comprehension. But thats a Trojan Horse. Even though we welcome seemingly friendly and proper political positions offered by the church here, that will give license to other churches to post their Trump-friendly words of wisdom.
Thats what I saw in the post, as well as your on-point observation.

So if the KKK became a benevolent society for a century, it would be OK to join that org too?
The Southern churches were holding back racial equality well into the 1960s, this includes the COGIC, A/G and JW extreme variants of Christianity, which have high AA membership.

Everyday MF45 opens his mouth or does crazy and inhumane things his supporters are going wtf ! Of course, the die hard cruel ones are getting woodies for his sadism but they have always been that way and were unloved children.

(160,545 posts)It could be the one who put the sign there isn't old enough to remember the fact the Klan bombed a large black church and murdered some young women who were inside.
Klan monsters never learned to play nice with other people.
If the person responsible for the sign does remember, this was a courageous, admirable action, and from a Baptist church, too! Horribly bad, stupid, twisted parenting.

Just like protesters lose their jobs or go to jail, Freedom isnt free. It costs many their lives. Organizations that act publicly should have the same consequences as individuals.
Thats sacrifice.

The Catholic Churches were the worst. But Protestant Churches did the same. I was one of those who talked to one of the Reporters about a Pastor telling us we had to vote against Obama. That Church lost half its Member ship, including me.

(17,986 posts)Put a stop to the Politicking around here. The Catholic Church was even boldly putting signs in the yard, passing out pamphlets inside the Church. Parishioners were furious. Leaving their Church, people transporting voters.
I know one woman who had hip surgery, she could not even walk, but transported people to vote. In her Caddie!
Even funnier Obama signs were all over the wealthy neighborhoods. Not all wealthy people are stupid.

(53,061 posts)There is a community church near Douglas AZ that had a very large sign next to their church sign (both on Church property) that said "ce n her for S Arizona Tea Party.
After driving by a couple dozen times I had extra time because of a cancelled appointment and stopped in front and took pictures. At the time I was wearing clothes similar to what s federal investigator would wear.
There was commotion inside the man we and I could see people looking at me. I crossed the street and took more pictures including those showing property lines.
Next time I went to Douglas the sign had been taken down.

(18,636 posts)I agree that churches should stick to whatever their particular God tells them and let government drive in it's own lane. I vote in a church, and I don't even like that.
Having said that, I'm cheering these people on while they're scoring points.

(17,986 posts)I made it clear in my new Church that I was strictly for Separation of Church and State.
A couple had started in about Politics, I simply walked away but then mentioned to a couple how I felt. Very simply, not rude. I know word spreads in a small Church. I went there because the young Pastors are changing the direction of the Church. The Sermons are based on love and inclusion.
But I also know there are many there who do not like the change.

When I look at how SOME Christian evangelical communities have evolved its disturbing. Prosperity Gospel where the more money you make, the more God loves you. Where Make America White Again, including using tactics like separating children from families is fine. Mega churches with ego driven TV star pastors who live in gold gilded mansions, couldn't wait until heaven I guess.
