On edit: That was one of those shot in Odessa yesterday. I had missed that specific detail. Still, it's hard to keep up.

(14,570 posts)these last few decades is responsible for much of the carnage.
All the horrors we've inflicted on other nations, refugees, our own children, consumers, workers and the world itself - all these are directly attributable to our doctrine that shareholder profits are more important than life itself.
End this abusive form of capitalism by expanding the responsibility of corporations to include other stakeholders, and we won't cure the problems completely, but we'll all be a hell of a lot better off.
If you are interested, I recommend the 2012 Shareholder Value Myth, written by the late Lynn Stout, a Cornell University Law Professor. Also, the Roosevelt Institute in DC has some great papers about how shareholder primacy has driven up the prices of lifesaving drugs, resulted in busted unions, and put this planet on the path of uninhabitability.
The other thing this doctrine has given us is way more anxiety, depression and addictive behaviors, because humans aren't made to be 'rugged individualists pulling themselves up by the bootstraps' in a brutal dog-eat-dog world. That is a perverted and twisted way to even live. Humans are wired to help one another, to take care of their vulnerable, to act together for the common good.
So you end up with all this escapism: video games, porn, alcohol, opioids (capitalists making lots of PROFITS off those), sex, gambling and so on.
The sooner we grow up as a species and realize that since we are mortal, the lust for wealth and power is basically meaningless, so we're better off organizing ourselves around helping each other rather than greed, the better off this planet and ALL of its life will be.

(14,570 posts)Just a couple of anti-abortion fanatics. And you know what?
They don't EVER get to take the moral high ground, ever again. Not after what we've seen in the Trump concentration camps. Babies ripped from their parents, lost in our foster system, put up for adoption and all the people housed in filthy cages. If these fanatics consider themselves at war with all other cultures, then these are WAR CRIMES.
As to the subject of this tweet, only three words - assault weapon ban.

Assault Weapons Bans is the least effect laws for reducing gun violence. But they make for great culture war battles.
Bernardo de La Paz
(48,988 posts)At least it tends to reduce casualties.
The perfect is the enemy of the good. Banning assault weapons won't solve the problem. No single action will solve it. But that is no reason for inaction.
There is no rational reason action can't be taken on multiple fronts.
aikoaiko
(34,169 posts)My issue is that an assault weapons ban that forces 20+ millions firearms to be turned in to save a few lives may be one of the least effective, most costly means of doing so. And by costly I mean at the expense of more productive laws, losing the Executive and Legislative branches.
Clinton, in his memoir, talked about how his AWB helped reorganize the NRA and cost the Democratic party.

(28,252 posts)I thought of asking you about that, but I've decided it's just not worth it. Carry on.
aikoaiko
(34,169 posts)1. Universal background checks
2. Red flag laws
3. Raise age on some or all weapons to 21 of 25
4. Cap magazines at 30, maybe 25
5. Strengthen existing NICS check data processing
6. Safe storage laws
If something had to be done about so-called assault weapons, then allow an open and free NFA-like registration process.
