(29,194 posts)Lets say you know around 50 people (co-workers, family, community)... and they know another 20 people that you do not know)... so in the population of 1000 people with 2 degrees of separation from you, odds are that one of those people will be shot to death in the next year.
In my life... I've personally known 2 people to die by gunshot. One was probably my second best friend in middle school (hunting accident), the other was my college mentor and friend who was mysteriously killed by someone in an yet to be unsolved murder in 1981. He had told me in the weeks before his murder that "something was going on with a project he was working on for a government agency" but he never elaborated.
Those are the direct (1 degree) people... I know others who know people that have died in a mass shooting (Sunnyvale CA 1988 ESL shooting - 7 dead).
I'm almost certain that I know people who knew people that have died in mass shootings in other years, but I haven't made the connections.
I wouldn't be surprised that I know someone that knew a victim of the Gilroy Garlic festival shooting just a few weeks ago (but now long forgotten in the list of mass shootings).
