Abaco Island is suffering under the winds and rain of Hurricane Dorian.

As Hurricane Dorian, the strongest storm ever to hit the northwestern Bahamas, continued to pound Abaco on Sunday afternoon, it unleashed untold damage across parts of the island and caused widespread flooding.

Photos and videos posted to social media show the desperate attempts by many to get to safety as their homes filled with water and their roofs began to lift.

Several residents called from the Bahamian people to pray for them and their families as the catastrophic category 5 storm unleashed its fury.

Sustained winds increased to speeds of 185 miles per hour with gusts over 200 miles per hour as the storm approached the island. The intensity also makes the storm the strongest ones on record in the Atlantic.

At 2 p.m., the National Hurricane Center said the eye of Dorian was moving over Abaco and heading to Grand Bahamas with all its fury.

“Catastrophic hurricane conditions are occurring in the Abacos islands and will spread across Grand Bahama island later today and tonight. “Do not venture out into the eye, as winds will suddenly increase as the eye passes,” the advisory warns.

In Marsh Harbour, homes and businesses were under water. There was no discernible difference between the ocean and what is usually the land.
