General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs it just me or do fewer people carry wallets these days? When I was an adolescent I remember my
father telling me that a gentleman (whatever that was) always carries a wallet and a handkerchief. I quit carrying a handkerchief many years ago because it seemed so unnecessary. And if you need to use it do you really want it back in your pocket?
But it just seems like I know more and more people who have wallets, but leave them in the car or in their desk or whatever.
I know. It's an inane post, but the news is making me goofy.

(12,207 posts)Instead, when I need a hanky, I use the big one ( Wipe nose on shirt sleeve).
It works and its quicker to get to than fumbling for a small piece of cloth.

(3,524 posts)I probably haven't carried one of those since I was a kid, 40+ years ago. Kleenex seems to be ubiquitous at this point, so I can always bum one off of someone. But, no wallet? How does that work? I always make sure I have some cash on me, and there's my driver license, and insurance cards if there's an accident or doctor's appointment. And I have a 'dumb' phone, and that won't be of any help. So, I cant even begin to imagine life without a wallet.
I wear a wristwatch too, if that's where this conversation is eventually headed.

(2,227 posts)Where would we keep that condom that every teenage boy HAD to carry (but never got lucky enough to use.... so it remained virgin for such a long time that it was probably permeable... So it was lucky that we never got to use it )?

(86,048 posts)Now I don't lock the door before I do a quick check for wallet, phone & keys. If I have all those, I'm good to go most of the time. I make a point to load all other things before going back inside to retrieve those items which also include a hat and shades.

(22,755 posts)my father's wallet.... when he died I gave all the money (about 1k) in it to a woman that I had hired to help care for him and thought it would be wise to use the wallet for myself (that and his scores of handkerchiefs)

(156 posts)Got my license and debit card in it and usually less than $20 in it. If you've ever watched Live PD you would be amazed at the people driving around with no ID or license. That person will never be me

Those who never have cash are idiots, because there are times when you do need cash, such as if you want to buy a pack of gum. Okay, so you can use your debit or credit card, but the store will have a certain minimum, usually two or three dollars, and so you wind up buying stuff you don't need just to met that minimum. If, instead, you kept twenty bucks or so in your wallet, you'd spend the fifty cents or so the gum cost. Period.
Likewise, people who never have a credit card with them are idiots because if you're somewhere and your car breaks down, how are you going to pay for the repairs? Or the hotel you need to stay in overnight?
Hankies, no one needs. There's always tissues.
When I was a little girl in Catholic school we were required to have a hanky, and a common question was, "Is it for show or blow?"

(4,358 posts)I figured why make it easy for them by putting all the good stuff in one liftable element.
Now I carry everything loose and in different pockets. I only ever really use one credit card, the odd loyalty card and sometimes my library card and I can plan ahead for where I'm going so whatever I need is in the top pocket and easy to grab.

(5,279 posts)which I carry in a leather hip pouch I bought at a Renaissance Faire before hand surgery, so I could carry everything on one side. Also in the pouch are my passport, a spare cellphone battery, and my house and car keys (which thanks to keyless entry and ignition, I rarely have to take out of the pouch)
I also carry a money clip in a front pocket. Decades ago, a "travel wisely" video suggested keeping ID and money separately, so if a robber confronts you, you can throw the money at him and skedaddle the other way with you cards and ID.
I USED to carry a handkerchief, but not out of the habit.

(22,474 posts)I still carry a wallet, except for 20 years I have carried it in my front pocket since I had a back injury that required surgery.
Occasionally I will look through my wallet and discover things that should have been thrown away years ago, expired coupons and the like as well as my 9th grade ID card.
Carrying a wallet is likely generational and for guys our wallets really do become a part of us which is why when we lose them we are in such a panic because it's like, "My God! I've lost my hand, where did I leave my hand?"
Also, in my wallet I carry a spare key for my car so I don't worry about getting locked out.
