Ryan's lies about running a Sub-Three Hour Marathon catching up with him

Did Ryan Really Run a Sub-Three Hour Marathon?
Runner's World is investigating claims by Rep. Paul Ryan that he ran a marathon in under three hours but "has been unable to find any marathon results by Ryan."

"Requests for more information from Ryan's Washington and Wisconsin offices, and from the Romney-Paul campaign, have so far gone unanswered."

For anyone who was alive during the 60s, they will recall the incident that made headlines around the world about Chairman Mao Tse Dong and his impossible feat of swimming. On July 16 he took a swim in the Yangtze River by the Wuhan bridge to show his nation of China that at 72 years of age, he was still in robust health. It was claimed that he swam 15 kilometers of the river in 65 minutes, which would have been a world record. Everyone knew it was just his party's propaganda.

Records of timed races are easily checked. Sponsors of timed races keep copious records and are very diligent in recording chip time.

If Ryan ran a sub-three marathon, it can be guaranteed that there is a record of it. Also, you don't get to claim a time unless it is official. Timing yourself doesn't count. Ryan is a fabricator.

playing to 20 handicap, new course that had rated a 200 yard par three as the toughest hole. Put a three iron within two feet and got the birdie. I was playing with the course owner who was friggen irate, first he was pissed that the hole was deemed the toughest on his course and then during the first major event a hacker netted a zero.

42. This from The New Yorker:

Last week, in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, Paul Ryan said that he had run a marathon in under three hours, or, more precisely, “I had a two hour and fifty-something.” That is quite speedy, and running fans in the forums of Letsrun.com treated the claim with great skepticism. The Internet bore no trace of the run, and Ryan doesn’t have the extremely lean frame of your typical fast marathoner. Also, people who run that quickly are generally neurotic about their times. Shouldn’t Ryan remember his exactly? “He is too intense and driven to just forget something like that,” one commentator wrote.

Slate and Runner’s World investigated. Questions were raised, given the questions about Ryan’s honesty in his convention speech. This evening the terrific running journalist, Scott Douglas, figured out that Ryan had actually run a 4:01 in Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1991, when he was a college student. This is not quite so fast. A 2:55 would have put Ryan 130th out of 3277 men in that race. A 4:01 put him 1990th. It’s the difference between racing and running.

I contacted the campaign this evening about the discrepancy. Ryan, through a spokesman, responded that he'd just mixed things up. “The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin—who ran Boston last year—reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight."

I'm quite sure Runner's World only went to check on the numbers so they could write a story about it. It's the freaking election season, and having Ryan's face on their cover would be a natural draw to sell magazines. It would have been a great story for them.

And Ryan has already back pedaled on this. Turns out it was actually a 4-hour marathon. Heh.
