This makes me really queasy, and I'm a gun owner.

(15,805 posts)poor child? At a tender and impressionable age, her parents have brainwashed her and turned the girl into a zealot, a brainless gun clinger.
My first thought was the case contained some beautiful musical instrument that she had been wishing for and she was overjoyed with happiness. It never, ever, occurred to me that there was a gun inside until she pulled out the rifle stock.
I could have wept.

(25,586 posts)I owned a gun way younger than this kid and Im not a gunhumper. You know nothing of this childs life or interests and you have no idea whatsoever how her beliefs will evolve over the course of growing up.
I own one really old Russian WW2 gun that doesnt even have ammunition and which Ive never fired; damn thing might not even work anymore. I only own it because I like old things. Having a rifle as a kid didnt impact my life at all.
Histrionic overreactions arent useful in any way.

(15,805 posts)that isn't the primary issue. Rather it was that child's overwrought, bizzare emotional response, the tears and sobs as shes gushing over a gun and fondling it like it was a living thing.
That does not seem like a healthy behavior for any kid, but there she was, ecstatically adoring her gun like most kids would love on a new puppy. That gun was the most important thing in her world. How did that happen?

(21,560 posts)the minute we stopped thinking about guns as tools just like we would a hammer or a screwdriver, is when they became part of the culture wars. Now having a gun for many right wingers is a CULTURAL thing just like apple pie and baseball. So we flood our children and our homes with weapons because it is just part of growing up now.......... and we're shocked when gun violence spirals out of control.

(63,221 posts)Giving a weapon like that to a young child is a sign of poor parenting and even child abuse.
The fact that she was so overjoyed to receive it tells you that her parents raised her with values that are completely out of whack.
How long before she or one of her siblings accidentally or even intentionally murders somebody with that weapon? Putting guns into the hands of children is always a stupid idea!

(18,600 posts)I thought I saw a unlock lever that would indicate it is a double barrel. If so it is very likely she shoots trap or skeet.
I need more than a one minute video to judge the child and her family.

(34,373 posts)was a cop and taught me to respect guns before I could walk and taught me to shoot when I was 8. Not once did I attach any emotion to them. They are tools--dangerous tools, not some object of adoration.

(25,586 posts)a shy, kind, easy-going vegan. I got my first gun (a bolt action .22) when I was about 8 and was allowed to use it unsupervised at 10. I dont believe the mere presence of a firearm is an inherent evil, or sickening in any way.
Its not how weve raised our kids, obviously, but a well-brought-up child raised to handle guns responsibly doesnt worry me. Fucked-up boys raised by the internet in possession of firearms is a whole different issue. I dont think this little girl qualifies as a potential threat.
