Tomorrow, a 20-yard roll-off dumpster is going to appear on my driveway, in front of our detached garage, but with room to open its doors in front of that garage. This is the second time in 15 years we've had one of those delivered. Each time, we get brutal and discard whatever we haven't used and don't plan to use. We get rid of the useless, the excess, the unwanted by simply tossing it in that 20-yard box. Then the same truck that brought it here will take it away again and what we put in it will no longer be part of our lives. It's a ritual. Every so often, the accumulation of junk has to go. I don't care where it goes, as long as it's out of my sight.
We're going to be in a similar situation in national politics next year. Mountains of useless garbage and worthless excess have collected in D.C., and it's time to load it up and have it all hauled away so we can make a fresh start. We'll toss Donald Trump in there first, followed by the ugly group of right-wing sychophants surrounding him. A 20-yard roll-off dumpster, though, won't do the job. We're going to need a fleet of them brought in and then taken away after we've cleaned up the mess.
It's hard work moving 20 yards of garbage and trash. It's no fun. It will be even harder work shoving Trump and his immense cohort into the even larger dumpsters we'll need. We won't like the work so much, but we'll enjoy the result of our labors. With all the useless garbage, trash, and debris hauled off to some distant landfill, we'll be able to bring in the cleaning crew and start over with new furnishings and decorum. No longer will we have to look at the eyesore that the Trump administration has been. We'll just load it all up and let the able men in their trucks haul it off for disposal.
Right now, it looks difficult to manage, but it's just a matter of systematically identifying what is useless, noxious, or smelly and tossing it. So, lets put on our work clothes, don our gloves, and get to work on this Fall's clean-up project. We'll be tired at the end of it, but what a relief it will be to be rid of all that detritus and garbage! Let's all pitch in. Many hands, they say, make light work.

(32,632 posts)toss it out.
If you fill it neatly, you can get twice as much in your load.

(13,771 posts)My late husband's collection. I've recorded a few significant one's on CDs. The rest I would probably never listen to. Large collection of classical music, some folk music, and singers such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Comoe, etc. He's been gone more than 9 years and I moved them to my current house two years ago. Getting ready to move to a smaller place and just won't have room for them.

(33,232 posts)Most of them aren't worth much but I'd rather they got a chance to stay in circulation rather that go to the landfill.

(32,546 posts)... is to not buy the stuff in the first place. If you can do that, you've got it knocked.

(13,771 posts)Lots of things I just tell myself I'll think about it overnight and if it's still important tomorrow, then I'll buy it. It almost never is important the next day.

(14,521 posts)After 20 years in our home. The youngest kid getting ready to go off to college I enacted the purge. Well a partial purge. The shed, garage and downstairs.
I am now on a strict diet of not buying things that doesn't add have value to my everyday life.

(146,248 posts)That's all-inclusive, including disposal. It's definitely worth it. I'd estimate it would take roughly 15-20 Ranger pickup loads to clear it all. Those would have to go to our trash transfer station, where I'd have to sort the contents into the right areas. With the dumpster, I pick the junk once, put it in there and I'm done. I do it systematically, starting at the front of the dumpster and build height as I work back. Flat stuff on the bottom, and soft stuff on top. I spent about two hours looking at everything before planning what to put in there when.
It will take me three or four partial days to load everything, because I'm 74 years old and have to take frequent breaks. When I'm finished the dumpster will be full, front to back, side to side and bottom to top. Last time, the guy who picked it up said, "Jesus, you got a lot of stuff in there. Most people just toss it in and call it good. You packed it in! Good job!" Nothing over the top of the sides. I get my money's worth on those jobs, but hope this is the last time I have to do it. I'm tired.
The worst thing about it is neighbors, who think I won't mind a mattress or two tossed in there. They charge extra for mattresses, and those neighbors aren't interested in paying anything. So, I just say "No, sorry." I'm going to fill it up. I guess they think it's free to get a dumpster brought to your house. I just don't know.

(10,134 posts)And take it to the dump station for free....10 min down the road. They don't recycle unfortunately but wire fencing and metal can be sorted out.
I'm this close to taking everything in the basement to the dump. But my kids are still storing stuff down there. It's a pain to clean around it and I know they've forgotten what's down there.
