Phillip Lee literally got up and walked across the House to sit with the Liberal Democrats. Boris no longer has a majority in the Commons.

(4,341 posts)So don't expect anything like this to happen in the USA, republicans prefer to not run for office anymore than to go out and defend the country, no sense of heroics, just fear from the tweeter-in-chief.

(327 posts)...maybe even too late? With some exceptions, both the Tories, and Labour, have been putting their own party interests well before the National well-being since the referendum.
If there was an abundance of patriotism in the two main parties, they would have announced to the population "37% of you want to leave the EU, we're sure you have some concerns. We hear you, but it was an advisory referendum and leaving is a bloody stupid idea. It's not going to happen, sorry!"

The Senate will be back in session. Justin Amish had courage in the House.
Susan Collins is just behind Moscow Mitch in unpopularity. She used that teeny, tiny voice to posture, then voted with Trump,(93%) one too many times. The Kavanaugh vote seemed to sink her.
Wonder how many Republican Senators will retire this year?

(1,336 posts)However, because the Conservatives no longer have a majority, they cannot pass any money bill unless at least one member of one of the other parties agrees to vote with the Cons. If not, then a "No Confidence" vote would be taken and the government falls, triggering a new election.
It will be interesting to see if other Cons follow Dr. Lee's path, and how Boorish handles the situation.
I think the protests last weekend - especially in London, but also in other major cities - have made a major impact on sitting Conservatives.
However, would love to hear the perspective of our British DUers on this.

The opposition has to get its act together and not undermine one another by fighting and having everyone stand in every area
In 2017, the Greens bit the bullet and didn't run candidates in areas where they'd take from Labour and in a couple of places Labour pulled its candidate because the Greens were stronger

Still, we have constitutional rights, and the brits really don't, and they still have the long-suffered house of "lords."
It will be a test of both systems to see who survives the decade. I sure hope the brits can get their crap together and protect world finances.
