A vegan woman has filed a suit against her neighbors in the Australian supreme court after complaining about the smell of meat and fish emanating from their barbecues.
Cilla Carden took her case to the Supreme Court of Western Australia, citing her neighbors' barbecuing, smoking and children playing basketball, among other complaints, reported Australia's Nine.
Carden accused her neighbors of intentionally setting up these nuisances.
"It's deliberate," she told Nine. "All I can smell is fish. I can't enjoy my backyard."

(14,849 posts)Never mind that this woman is probably mentally ill - it certainly sounds as if she's paranoid, thinking the neighbors are grilling just to bother her. No, all vegans are identical and interchangeable, and if you do succeed in becoming one, RainCaster will detest you.

(4,516 posts)Substitute the word Ford or Chevy for vegan and you have the same type of inference but it would not get to you.
I am a vegetarian and when ever people offer me meat to eat I say no thanks I am a vegetarian. Immediately there is tension and I did not put it there.
Then someone thinks I am preaching or something when I never tell people how to eat.

(31,261 posts)As I have grown older, I am more sensitive to glutens (make me feel like I have a spot of bad indigestion). My case is mild compared to others, I have solved my issue by putting nutritional yeast into things like spaghetti sauce and homemade bread, that seems to help me a lot. I also drink more water than I used to.
pnwmom
(108,925 posts)Unless the food isn't processed at all, you can't tell very well by looking. For example, a steak might have been marinated with soy sauce.
I can say no to anything that obviously has gluten in it, but the problem is with all the non-gluten foods that are prepared with gluten.

(108,925 posts)My family members and close friends know how to prepare food for me now, and there are even restaurants around here that understand. (In one case the chef's wife is Celiac.)
When I travel I go to restaurants (not food courts) and am careful about what I order and how I explain it. Sometimes a chef will even come out and talk to me, and sometimes I just tell him or her my issue, and ask for suggestions. I've even had chefs prepare something delicious that's not on the menu because I gave them free rein to make whatever they wanted -- as long as it had no gluten.
But if we're staying in a place for a while, we rent a condo with a kitchen rather than stay in a hotel.

(12,540 posts)to say them at all. A simple no thank you is almost always sufficient, so if youre adding Im a vegetarian, youre doing it for a reason. And anyone reading this thread can see the reason very clearly. Except, apparently, for you.

(26,177 posts)When someone says they are Vegan, my response is more 'Oh dear' because that's a dicey accommodation. My nephew and his wife are Vegan and I've given up on trying to get things right. Even if I have all of the right ingredients, they never meet their 'high standards'. They finally decided to start bringing their own food, which was fine, but now they are refusing to even sit at the table, with us evil omnivores.
They are sorely missed at holiday gatherings, but their lectures certainly aren't.

(4,516 posts)Some Mexican restaurants use chicken broth or put beaf in their red sauce.
So I ask the waiter if that is the case where we are.
If they do I dont eat while others do. That upsets them but I didnt cause it.
It is a silly thing to get upset about.
People should get use to people not eating meat or dairy. The numbers of them is increasing.
Siwsan
(26,177 posts)However my nephew and his wife don't trust that so they will only eat at strict vegan establishments. I've gone out to eat, with them, but I find the fare to be VERY overpriced and not particularly satisfying.
Life was much easier when they were vegetarian. And not just because of the food. It's like dealing with religious cult members and the lectures and sanctimonious attitudes get really old, really fast. I've had to draw a line, more than once. I realize not all vegans are like that, but that's been my family experience.

If you are a vegan, that is fine. I don't care what you eat. (General you/me)
But, that should go both ways. You should be able to allow me to make my own dietary choices as well without a lecture every time I buy or order something.
Most people are able to deal with this basic social contract. I've seen both vegans and omnivores act horribly toward the other for no real reason.
If I have a vegan dinner guest I cook things that they will enjoy as well as things my non-vegan friends like. Everyone enjoys their meal without being assholes.

Blue_true
(31,261 posts)None of what they stand for is good.
There are some borderline cases:
The Salvation Army does a lot of good feeding and housing people that really have no where to go. They seem to somehow be Affliated with Goodwill, an organization which helps really poor people by offering donated goods for cheap resale. But the Salvation Army has an outdated sexual orientation view, although I have never heard of them turning away a needy person because of sexual orientation, at least not the local one.
People don't realize that the YMCA/YWCA are religious organizations, though that should be clear by pronouncing the full names. I used to have a membership for when I was in a big city. Their administrators seem to be religious. But I have not seen cases where I could say that I noticed discrimination, they seem to serve whoever come to their facilities.
The groups with the mega-churches and leaders that have mansions and private jets, or the ones that are commenting on and attacking the rights of other members of society, are the ones that I look sideways at, and their number among evangelicals seem to be growing, not shrinking as it should be.

(82,849 posts)Our neighbors, who rent part of the house next door, like to sit outside and play cards with their friends for hours on end. They can be pretty noisy, but that's not a major problem.
