During Tuesday's show, Goldberg addressed Messing's tweet encouraging the publication of the names of attendees at the president's upcoming fundraiser in Beverly Hills during Emmys week, calling Messing's desire to see Trump's donors outed publicly dangerous.
Listen, the last time people did this, people ended up killing themselves, Goldberg told her audience.
This is not a good idea, OK? she continued. Your idea of who you don't want to work with is your personal business. Do not encourage people to print out lists because the next list that comes out, your name will be on and then people will be coming after you.
We had something called a blacklist and a lot of really good people were accused of stuff. Nobody cared whether it was true or not. They were accused. And they lost their right to work. ... In this country, people can vote for who they want to. That is one of the great rights of this country," Goldberg added.

Meh... we know what kind of people you have given a pass to, Whoopi 'I know it wasn't rape-rape' Goldberg. How's your friend Mel doing these days?

(33,643 posts)OR ... it could lead to a 'Boycott', which I suspect is actually 'the goal', and there's nothing dangerous about that.
Unless you're one of the people running a company that's boycotted, of course.
There's a reason why 'donors' to political campaigns go into the public record, Whoopi ... maybe you skipped that class in school though?
Disclosure of this nature is part of our system, and ID'ing 'donors' by their attendance at fundraisers is inherently no different.

(46,020 posts)Don't you dare invoke Philip Loeb to make your point. Loeb killed himself 64 years and two nights ago because he couldn't get work b/c he was a labor activist in the theater and that put him on the Blacklist. That and he wouldn't name names. The situation at hand is a false analogy.

(9,470 posts)Thats the only rule Republicans follow (or its illegal, but nearly impossible to prove).
I signed the Scott Walker recall in 2011 and the Republicans had no problem posting my name on the internet.

(102,119 posts)I see a big difference. The former was horrible, of course, but I think we all have the right to know if someone publicly supports and significantly funds someone who is so antithetical to our own beliefs

(82,849 posts)You think donors to Trump are really going to kill themselves if they're identified? Also, these donors aren't being identified (however tenuously) for something that happened eight, ten, fifteen or twenty years ago. It's something that's happening right now, today. Folks like Ring Lardner and John Howard Lawson didn't hide their politics in the 1930s and 1940s, because there was nothing illegal in what they were doing at the time they were doing it. The Trump donors want to hide their identities because they know they'll have to explain themselves right now in real time.
While HUAC labored mightily to produce some on-screen evidence of Communist influence in the movies, about the best they came up with was Lela Rogers (Ginger's mother) claiming that the line "Share and share alike; that's democracy" was the Communist Manifesto writ extremely small. Donald Trump is, right now, using the power of his position to bully, demean, threaten, and condemn individual citizens by name. By going to a fundraiser for Trump, it's reasonable to assume that people endorse Trump's behavior. If they don't endorse Trump's behavior, let them explain themselves, in public and out in the open. Skulking around to private fundraisers is the antithesis of the First Amendment, affording them all of the protection while exempting them from all responsibility.
