Healthcare collections vs past due

So last week we received a collections letter from a certain country wide laboratory company for $20.00 - the account was from June and I had just overlooked it.

This week my boss gets a "past due" letter from the same company also for $20.00 - his account from November, 2011. He knows about it, but doesn't want to pay.

Now why do you suppose that I get a collections letter being 2 months over due and he just gets a "hey you need to pay this please" when he is 9 months overdue?

Could it be that our zip codes are a little different.

it's just an account on a page. Someone or a machine spits out a report and prints a letter.
