The Trump administration is rolling back of requirements for more energy-efficient lightbulbs a move lambasted by critics as being both costly to consumers and harmful to the planet.
The Energy Department announced Wednesday that it was eliminating efficiency standards for many commonly used lightbulbs. These standards had been included in energy laws implemented under President George W. Bush and finalized during President Barack Obamas tenure, NBC News reported. In the years since, the bulb rules have become a cause for conservative media and politicians, including President Donald Trump
Scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2020, the regulations would have raised the energy efficiency requirements for many popular lightbulb types, including those used in bathroom vanities, chandeliers and recessed lighting. The standards would have led to the phasing out of incandescent and halogen bulbs used for these purposes and replaced them with fluorescent or LED versions. LED bulbs use up to 80% less electricity and last considerably longer than traditional incandescent and halogen bulbs.
The rule would have applied to about half of the approximately 6 billion lightbulbs used in the U.S., the Natural Resources Defense Council said.
Consumers were predicted to save billions of dollars thanks to the new rule ― and millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions would also have been prevented, experts said.

(104 posts)JC on a pogo stick, why do this? What is the purpose of rolling this back other then to stick to the "man"? This should be a no-brainer, leave it alone and it helps the planet, helps the consumer, helps companies save money and reduce emissions. But again (and again, and again) this administration and GOP is the "no-brainer".
I am rambling incoherently I am so mad, discouraged, etc. Is it too early to have my glass of wine yet?

(7,416 posts)I really don't envision manufacturers saying "Gee, we need to start making those incandescent light bulbs again!". This is just another nod to his dipshit deporable followers to "stick it to teh libs" again (I mean is that *all* they do all day? Get a fucking hobby or something)

(4,448 posts)A few years ago I tried to buy some 100w bulbs. Couldn't find any. Just LED or flourescent.
In that case I wanted a traditional 100w bulb BECAUSE of the heat it produces. That heat of course is inefficiency. Heat that could be turned into light.
In that case I wanted the old style because I wanted the heat that it produced. The old 100w bulbs are basically cheap heaters and I needed a cheap heater to put into an engine compartment to keep it above freezing.
In any event. It's just weird that Trump is attacking this. Production of old style bulbs has stopped. Factories are not going to spin up production of an outdated product that ALREADY stopped producing, just because Trump struck down a future ban.

(33,033 posts)I have a couple of the compact florescent bulbs, 13.5 watts, being used to keep some welding rods dry. The rest of my garage and house are running LEDs. I had 2 "security" lights at 250W each, lighting my ponds. Those were each replaced with 3 LED lights at 10W each (total 60W replacing a total of 500W).
Doofus Donald just wants to destroy.
