TX Trump voter learns about plans for "the wall"..."I never thought they'd go through a subdivision"

BROWNSVILLE, Tex. — Shirley Menard says she did not think all that much about Donald J. Trump’s proposed border wall when she cast a reluctant vote for him in 2016.

She is thinking about it a lot more now that plans call for part of what could be a 30-foot-tall stretch of wall to land in her backyard, dividing the River Bend Resort and Golf Club, which hugs the Rio Grande. About 70 percent of the community — some 200 properties — would be stranded south of the barricade but north of the river. Fifteen holes of the golf course could be there, too.

An unsettling lesson in unexpected consequences has left some residents rethinking their support for the wall and the president who has made it his signature project.

“I never thought they’d go through a subdivision,” said Ms. Menard, a former Houston schoolteacher who said she had been shaken since she was notified in June of plans to build the wall next year. “My blood pressure has not been normal since I got that letter.”

Even if Marianne Williamson signed it. Now you could make the argument that they shouldn't build around there due to flooding potential but that's not the issue here.

What if Trump decided he wants a 10 mile wide demilitarized zone across California and Arizona and put up a 2nd fence? Would you feel the same way, that anyone who lived too far south in San Diego should have known they're getting what they deserve? I'm sure some of them voted for Trump.

child for almost everything wrong with America these days. It started in the 80's (just like lots of places) and gradually got worse till the middle 90's with the election of "W" and has gone down ever since. There are still lots of good smart people here but I live in rural Texas now (formally Houston and Austin) and the mentality is unbelievable. So when some totally clueless ex-school teacher (as featured in the OP) treats us to another "Gee, I never thought .." gem. Yes, we're kind of inclined to respond with a "Boy, howdy .. why does this not surprise me," as an off the cuff. Even if it ain't entirely fair.

That's in the article. That was said by a woman who voted for trump.

What I think she (and millions of other dolts) doesn't get is that a lot of us do think about shit before it affects us personally, because we understand that it can/will affect us, and everyone else later. And we don't want to have bad shit happen.

I hope trump's wall never gets built. I hope, that if it does get built, it doesn't go through any subdivisions. But I hope that if it does get built, and absolutely has to go through one subdivision...it's Ms. Menard's. I hope that even if it goes through that subdivision it doesn't have to be built in anyone's back yard. But....if it just has to go through one back yard....yeah, Ms Menard's.

During the 2016 election, I told him about the Republicans' plan to gut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

Without skipping a beat, he said "As long as it doesn't affect me, I don't care."

He has a fat pension from the San Francisco Airport, which comes with Rolls Royce healthcare, so if he lost SS or Medicare, he'd really be no worse for the wear. A loss, yes. A devastating loss, no.

She likely lied about the "reluctant" to look better. If she was truly reluctant, she would be set to vote for any democrat that we nominate, knowing that we won't nominate an insane or incompetent person.

Rivers shift over time so the border line is actually where the river was when the border treaties were approved. Lyndon Johnson settled the last dispute in the 60's with a land swap that gave Mexico land north of the Rio Grand and the Mexico gave the US some land north of the Rio Grande. On the US side it's called Chamizal Memorial on the Mexican side it's called Chamizal Park., which is where the famous Las Equis statue is. The memorial is a tribute to peacefully settling disputes.

cutting across in a strait line makes sense. So that subdivision will be on the other side of the wall but technicly in the US. That is a dellema. They could put a gate there but those ornery Mexicans could get thru.

There are gates and people who live on the "Mexican side" can come and go, though they often don't get things like mail or trash service.

62. I read an article a few years ago about a section of wall like this.
Thu Sep 5, 2019, 08:08 PM
Sep 2019

The wall went right through people's yards and even a community college. Students who had a class on the other side of the wall had to travel 20 minutes to an opening in the wall and then back to the college. One man had to put his cows on the other side of the wall from his barn because that's where the grass was.

The real kicker is how they pay for the land when they build the wall on your property. They only pay for the little strip of land that the wall is on not the whole property even though having a wall divide your property pretty much ruins the value.

These people think that Donald Trump actually gives a flying fuck about them. How cute and quiant a notion. Donald Trump couldn't care less if this person or any of the others who rally round him live or die. True of the Republicans in general. They all want to line their pockets with cool cash, and rule like a passel of royals and nobility.

when W tried to build a border fence in TX, with many outrages like this, it got mired in over 300 lawsuits and approximately 60 are still pending.

The federal government has rights to an extremely narrow strip of land along the CA, NM and AZ borders, which is why the majority of that strip in those states has some kind of barrier, like this Normandy fencing in some areas to stop vehicles, but land right up to the Texas border belongs to people, local governments, businesses and other organizations, like preservationists.

That the wall would follow the lines of their gerrymandered districts?

It's situations like these where I kinda sorta support a wall. In the same way that I kinda sorta have no problem with tariffs that affect those companies or people who thought that somehow they'd be exempt from the effect of corruption and rampant criminality.

So I'm a little surprised myself that some subdivision span the US-Mexican border.

I seem to recall though a library or some other public building that spans the US-CANADA border though. I want to say Point Roberts but my memory is hazy on this.

While hopefully I can be forgiven for not knowing this, SURELY someone who LIVES in that subdivision would have known where the doggone border is!
