Salman Rushdie destroys Trump for 'inventing a mythology of a false past' to justify his actions

“I think that what Mr. Trump is doing here that is similar to what’s happening in Britain and even what’s happening in India is in all three place, leaders are inventing a mythology of a false past, a kind of golden age, you know, that if we could only get back to, that everything would be good,” Rushdie told anchor Ari Melber. “You know, make America great again. You want to ask when exactly was that? Was it last week? Was it before slavery was abolished? Was it before the civil rights movement? Was it before women had the vote? When was America great in the way we should get back to?”

What makes this more interesting is that the "mythic past" is one of the key facets of fascism:

1. Conjuring a “mythic past” that has supposedly been destroyed (“by liberals, feminists, and immigrants”). Mussolini had Rome, Turkey’s Erdoğan has the Ottoman Empire, and Hungary’s Viktor Orban rewrote the country’s constitution with the aim of “making Hungary great again.” These myths rely on an “overwhelming sense of nostalgia for a past that is racially pure, traditional, and patriarchal.” Fascist leaders “position themselves as father figures and strongmen” who alone can restore lost greatness. And yes, the fascist leader is “always a ‘he.’”

As Jason Stanley said in another interview, The United States does not have a fascist government, but Trump is using fascist techniques to rile up his base. He may not have 100% of the characteristics of a fascist, but he has enough that I'd be comfortable calling him a fascist.

The Mad Men era before civil rights and the feminist movement, before health and safety laws, before Miranda, before the nuclear arms treaty, before Rowe.

I've been calling that the "rat pack" era when America was led by strong man frank Sinatra and guided by "the playboy philosophy."

Basic marketing.

Advertising For Dummies, 2nd Edition
By Gary Dahl

You need to find a creative advertising hook that will grab your business’s potential customers’ attention. A creative hook is an emotional trigger in your advertising that attracts buyers; it appeals to their self-image and affirms that you provide what they’re looking for.

So shallow. Frumpy is not that smart. I'm getting weary with all of the conjecture and attribution about his intentions. He's not that deep.

What he is, is psycho in spades.

The fact that he's a psychopath/sociopath, that's why we need to be terrified.

America, meet your president with the Hare Psychopathy Checklist...

Definition
The Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) is a diagnostic tool used to rate a person's psychopathic or antisocial tendencies. People who are psychopathic prey ruthlessly on others using charm, deceit, violence or other methods that allow them to get [away] with [what] they want. The symptoms of psychopathy include: lack of a conscience or sense of guilt, lack of empathy, egocentricity, pathological lying, repeated violations of social norms, disregard for the law, shallow emotions, and a history of victimizing others.

Originally designed to assess people accused or convicted of crimes, the PCL-R consists of a 20-item symptom rating scale that allows qualified examiners to compare a subject's degree of psychopathy with that of a prototypical psychopath. It is accepted by many in the field as the best method for determining the presence and extent of psychopathy in a person.

The Hare checklist is still used to diagnose members of the original population for which it was developed— adult males in prisons, criminal psychiatric hospitals, and awaiting psychiatric evaluations or trial in other correctional and detention facilities. Recent experience suggests that the PCL-R may also be used effectively to diagnose sex offenders as well as female and adolescent offenders.

THAT'S what terrifies me!
