(CNN) - A mechanic for American Airlines was arrested Thursday and accused of trying to sabotage a commercial airliner shortly before it was set to take off from Miami International Airport for the Bahamas with 150 people on board.
Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani has been charged with "willfully damaging, destroying, disabling, or wrecking an aircraft, and attempting to do so," according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.
Alani allegedly explained that he tampered with the aircraft so he could get overtime working on the plane. https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/06/us/florida-american-airlines-mechanic-faces-sabotage-charge/index.html?utm_source=CNN+Five+Things&utm_campaign=00ed50ce00-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_09_06_07_57&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_6da287d761-00ed50ce00-104928233

(13,400 posts)alert to the pilots and stop them from taking off, that's a lot different than trying to cause a crash. It's a real reckless, stupid way to try and scam OT, but hopefully no more than that.

(10,050 posts)Now we have to worry about pissed off airline employees trying to use us in union contract disputes!
So this jerk told authorities he didnt want to harm the aircraft or the people aboard, but just intended to cause a delay or cancellation in anticipation of obtaining overtime work. Good job, you idiot!

(19,781 posts)Probably silly to worry but it seems like whenever an airline is having labor issues with its mechanics it turns out to me AA. That's just left me with a complex about them this white knuckle flyer doesn't need.
