Saints QB Drew Brees defends himself after appearing in video produced by anti-LGBTQ group

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees on Thursday defended his participation in a video that was released by the religious organization Focus on the Family, a group that is widely recognized as anti-LGBTQ.

Focus on the Family has, among other things, promoted “conversion therapy,” a radical pseudoscientific practice that aims to change an LGBTQ person’s sexual orientation. Brees drew criticism in the days following the release of the video because of its connection to the organization.

Thursday, in front of his locker, Brees strongly defended himself. He released a video statement shortly before the Saints locker room opened to reporters, then spent several minutes answering questions in front of his locker.

Brees took umbrage with what he considered to be a sensationalist headline, referencing a report in Big Easy Magazine that fell under the headline “Drew Brees records video for Anti-LGBTQ religious organization.” He began his media session by asking the reporters gathered around him who had seen the video if they thought it was a fair headline.

It leads to all of the horrible things that group promotes. He can’t defend this crap with ignorance.

Conversion therapy is evil and it is torture and causes deaths.

Fuck Drew Brees is he stands with an organization who perpetrates this evil.

Focus on the Family founded the bring your bible to school day. Yet here we are, supposed to believe that, that asshat didn't know who Dobson is? He is hiding behind religion and blaming the media for "sensationalizing" his support of a bigoted religious group.

We are also supposed to believe a Purdue graduate, who majored in Industrial Management is too stupid to know who and what FOTF stands for. Someone as smart as he is didn't even google the name of FOTF to see if that was an organization he wanted to attach his name to?

No way that he didn't know.

Shame as a fellow Purdue graduate. I actually don't have problems with kids bringing whatever reading material they want to school (short of pornography - I guess the Bible just makes it under that bar).

What this BYBTSD accomplishes is creating an environment for the kids to believe they are superior to those that don't participate.

Too bad they didn't have this when I was in school. I'm pretty sure I would have brought in a Devil's handbook, just to piss them off.

Drew should probably stay south of St. Phillip Street in the Quarter until he walks this back.
