Yosemite hiker killed in fall from Half Dome

A 29-year-old woman from Arizona died Thursday in Yosemite National Park when she fell 500 feet from Half Dome, park officials confirmed Friday.

Rangers installed cables to help hikers get to the top of the 8,800-foot rock face. The cables are installed each summer to assist the climbs of thousands of hikers who make the popular 14-mile round trip.

Half Dome is a massive granite feature at the east end of Yosemite Valley. Named for its shape, it rises 4,737 feet from the valley floor.

Every year, thousands of hikers trek to the top by heading up a 14-mile trail from Yosemite Valley. Since 2011, the park has required hikers to first obtain permits, as a way to control the crowds. There have been several fatal falls in recent years, the latest one occurring in 2018.
