Over the past few weeks, the FDA and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have been investigating hundreds of mysterious, vaping-related lung ailments across the country. Nearly 450 hospital cases in 33 states have been linked to vaping, while on Friday it was reported that a man in Indiana had died after exhibiting severe symptoms of lung illness, making him the third such person to succumb to vaping-related illness. On Friday, the CDC advised the public to refrain from using any e-cigarette cannabis, nicotine, or otherwise authorities are able to pin down what is making people sick.
Health officials have been stupefied by the trend, with healthy young people presenting at emergency rooms with symptoms mimicking severe lung illnesses like pneumonia. And as Rolling Stone previously reported, many have questioned whether the flourishing black market of bootleg THC cartridges may be behind the trend, as opposed to traditional e-cigarettes. But a recent report from the New York State Health Department sheds further light on this hypothesis. On Thursday, the health department said lab tests showed that nearly all of the cannabis products tested for vitamin E acetate, the oil derived from vitamin E that is most often found in supplements and skin creams.
While the FDA says it is too early to tell whether vitamin E acetate was the culprit in other cases across the country, a spokesperson for the agency said it was testing more than 100 products from other states for potential contaminants, including vitamin E acetate. In a press release, New York Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker encouraged caution, writing, We urge the public to be vigilant about any vaping products that they or any family members may be using and to immediately contact their health care provider if they develop any unusual symptoms. Vaping of unknown substances is dangerous, and we continue to explore all options to combat this public health issue.
A common substance added to facial moisturizers or taken independently as a supplement, vitamin E is not known to be harmful independently. But if inhaled, oils like vitamin E can cause lipoid pneumonitis, a rare condition that results from fat particles being ingested via the lungs, as Dr. Melodi Pirzada, chief of pediatric pulmonology at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Long Island, previously told Rolling Stone. Symptoms of lipid pneumonitis include chest pain, coughing, and difficulty breathing, which have been reported by many patients who have reported having used THC cartridges.

(62,444 posts)Whats been weird about this is that it is not as if this set of symptoms has been occurring with regularity, despite the fact that people have been vaping for a while.
But despite the sudden incidence of whatever has been causing this, the sweepingly triumphant proclamations about vaping have been odd.
Around 150,000 Americans are going to die of lung cancer this year. Thats the background.

(13,582 posts)I've read a few things carefully and no one is saying that is not the case. They say of the people with symptoms who submitted samples of cannabis products, all of them tested positive for vitamin E acetate. They don't say if all of those were or were not bought on the street.
I just got one of those cannabis vape pens and have only tried two varieties of Willie's Reserve. I looked to see if those had vitamin E acetate and didn't see one way or the other. I'm sticking with regular weed until they sort things out.
I'm thinking it can't be just vaping. Hookahs are similar enough. People have been vaping for a few hundred years at least if you count hookah's or similar devices.

They better figure this out quickly.

From those, it seems that illicit products are a strong common factor, and that Vitamin E acetate MAY be a common factor, but more work is needed.

(108,977 posts)On Wednesday, Oregon health authorities said a middle-aged adult who died in late July of a severe respiratory illness had used an e-cigarette containing marijuana oil purchased from a legal dispensary. Its the second death linked to vaping nationwide and the first to be linked to a product bought at a store. Illinois officials reported the first death last week. They did not specify what kind of product was used in that case.
market started cutting hash oil with "thickener's" about 9 months ago due to changing market conditions. The normal thickeners used in nicotine will not dissolve hash or are noticeable since they make a thinner vaping cartridge. Enter Vit E additives which is bacon grease consistency to fool people into thinking they are getting a pure THC cartridge.

(2,218 posts)I've been vaping about 5 years, very happily, and suddenly my friends have an excuse to subtly chide me about it. They know how stubborn I am but still they have to present this as if I'm suddenly in danger...not.
It was pretty apparent to me immediately that this was something new, a one-off.
I've never even considered buying some street shit, when there are a million tobacco/vape shops on every corner.
It's only now since they started restricting use that the bogus products are being sold on the street.
It's the kids who will suffer, since they can't get it legally now, and are vulnerable to whoever is hawking crap to them out there.

I only rarely use MJ but won't be using any carts but will stick to actual flower or edibles.

(28,340 posts)and it's so HEALTHY sounding too . . . IT'S JUST VITAMINS! IT'S NATURAL MANNNNNN
What a cynical asshole move by any chemists/physiologists/marketers who did this.
This is also EXAMPLE A of why "natural" is not in any way a reliable indicator of "good" or "healthful."
