Trump Spreading Breitbart Conspiracy Theory that Democrats Plan to Eliminate the 2nd Amendment

.

The story focused on a conspiracy theory that Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) spread during an appearance on “The Jeff Poor Show” in Huntsville, Alabama.

“The Democrats, Nancy Pelosi — they believe they have a winning issue here, so they’re going to force vote after vote om (sic) ultimately repealing the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Now, they’re smart enough not to do it all at once. What they will do is attack the right to bear arms incrementally until such time that the number of people who own arms and who believe in the Second Amendment right of self-defense — they will be in a minority and at that point, you can expect that the Democrats will move for an outright repeal of the Second Amendment,” Brooks claimed, without any evidence.

“It’s not going to happen overnight. In my judgment, it won’t happen this year or next year, four or five or six years from now. But the long-term strategy of the Democratic Party is to eliminate the Second Amendment right to bear arms,” Brooks argued.

No leading Democrat has called for eliminating the 2nd Amendment as the collective position of the party is that the 2nd Amendment allows common-sense gun safety legislation.

Despite that fact, Trump spread the conspiracy theory anyway.

importantly neither do their constituents. This is how Republicans get away with passing off the craziest conspiracy theories imaginable as certifiable factoids.

The 2nd does not mean unlimited firepower for an individual: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/03/second-amendment-text-context/555101/ Any pile of duff can start a conspiracy story (lie for the sake of it).

In his Heller court decision ruling that the 2nd is an individual right.

Once the 2nd Amendment is gone, the GOP loses its "the Democrats are going to repeal the Second Amendment!!!" screed, which they have used in every election ever since I was a child (I'm 70).

Recognizes that the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right of American Citizens to own firearms.

With reasonable restrictions such as AWB, magazine limits etc.

That is how we should respond to this bullshit.

Use of words such as "reasonable" and "common sense" are used to limit debate on issues because, after all, it's common sense!

The term "assault weapon" is likewise used that way. Since it's common sense and reasonable to ban assault weapons, only children-hating gun-lovers would be against it! And then we just keep expanding and expanding the definition of "assault weapon" in response to how gun makers and gun owners adapt to the ban.

Connecticut, for example, expanded its AWB after Newtown, retroactively making the rifle used there an "assault weapon".

The Patriot Act, for example. Or the way CBP claims the 100-mile periphery of the US as a special enforcement zone... and just happens to include about half the population. All those secret decisions, rules, and policies the DoJ has that we're not allowed to see. Whatever incestuous relationship the Feds have with Google, Facebook, etc., to harvest and mine our data. Ditto the cell companies and our GPS locations. Plus all the surveillance cameras, fixed and mobile licence plate cameras, red light cameras, EZ-Pass and the like, etc.

It's quite possible for an amendment to be functionally dead but still on the books. Or a constitutional right; try getting an abortion in Mississippi, Texas, or Kentucky, for example.

Once democrats are in power, Pelosi will send the message: "meet us at the door with your guns", and we'll just pick them up. What could possibly go wrong?

Seriously, gun owners have nothing to worry about as long as democrats own guns too, and we do. The NRA just uses it as a mantra to garner votes for otherwise unelectable republicans.
