French minister says 'no' to more Brexit delays

Updated / Sunday, 8 Sep 2019 16:57

France's foreign minister has said that, as things stand, the European Union would not grant the UK an extension beyond 31 October to negotiate its exit from the bloc ...

"In the current circumstances, it's no! ... We are not going to go through this every three months."

He said: "The (British) say that they want to put forward other solutions, alternative arrangements so that they can leave," he said, referring to Prime Minister Boris Johnson's efforts to find a way out of the backstop, the main sticking point.

"But we have not seen them and so it is 'no'... let the British authorities tell us the way forward," he said ...

1. Welsh independence: 'We need to talk about a post-Brexit future'

... More than 5,000 people marched in Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday calling for independence, following similar rallies in Caernarfon and Cardiff.

Former Labour MP Gwynoro Jones said discussions about what is best for Wales should take place like in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Tory MP David Davies questioned if a middle ground could be found.

Mr Jones said with Westminster politics "a shambles" and the UK "under strain", the future of Wales needed to be considered ...

2. Irish PM open to Northern Ireland-focused Brexit solution

Sep 2019

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar plans to discuss whether regulatory alignment between Ireland and Northern Ireland might form the basis of a Brexit deal when he meets British counterpart Boris Johnson on Monday.

But Varadkar said a breakthrough was unlikely during Monday’s talks with the EU summit on Oct. 17-18 providing the most likely venue for any agreement.

Talks to secure an orderly British exit from the European Union have floundered on the question of how to avoid infrastructure along the border between EU member Ireland and the British region of Northern Ireland.

The so-called “backstop” protocol in the current withdrawal agreement mandates regulatory alignment between Ireland and the whole of the United Kingdom, which Brexit supporters say would complicate new trade deals ...

As British political parties start campaigning for a general election that has yet to be agreed upon, a new poll has found that it would be in the opposition's interest to delay the vote until after the October 31 Brexit deadline.

A Liberal Democrats spokesperson confirmed to Euronews on Friday that they will not vote for a general election until an extension is agreed with the European Union. They added that a "constructive meeting" with Labour and the Scottish National Party (SNP) had found them "in agreement" not to let Prime Minister Boris Johnson "cut and run."

Ian Blackford, the SNP's leader in Westminster, also told the BBC after the aforementioned meeting on Friday that "We will have that election when the time is right but I will make you this promise, we are not going to have a long wait."

For the main opposition Labour party, the right time might just be after October 31 ...

NEW YORK (AP) — Could Brexit bring America’s “chlorinated chicken” to the United Kingdom?

The European Union has long refused to import poultry from the United States that is routinely rinsed with chemical washes to kill germs. But the United Kingdom’s planned exit from the EU is putting the practice back in the spotlight, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson even taunting Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn by calling him a “chlorinated chicken.”

The term has come to sum up concerns that Britain could be pressured to accept looser food safety standards when negotiating its own post-Brexit trade deals ...

... if Brexit is an event, it means people can see an end, a light at the end of the tunnel, a return to normality ...

Brexit is not an event. It is a process. And the tunnel is long. With no light in sight.

Brexit has been poisoning our politics, our economy and our relationships for the last three years. Businesses relocating to France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands is a part of Brexit. The collapse in inward investment is Brexit. The hike in weekly family food bills is Brexit. The hormone replacement therapy (HRT) shortage is Brexit. Johnson’s attempt to suspend our parliament as the world looks on in astonishment is Brexit.

All of this ... is just the beginning ...

Taiwan or Hong Kong... and remains with Ireland in the EU.

Wales and Scotland go full independent and remain in the EU.

Leaving just England with a no deal Brexit.

Of course, there would be border issues with both Scotland and Wales... But maybe Boris could get Mexico to pay for a wall.

So much for the British Empire.

... On June 23, 2016, 52 per cent of voters — overwhelmingly led by voters over the age of 50 — voted for Brexit. Most voters in England and Wales supported Brexit, while those in Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay. Almost immediately, some pro-Brexit voters started to express regrets, which led to a memorable monologue from British late-night host John Oliver, who yelled, “There are no F***ing do-overs.”

The vote caused the British pound to plummet to its lowest levels in decades and saw Cameron resign his position as prime minister ...

... European leaders were quick to criticize May and her government for insinuating both that negotiations might be quick and that Britain would be able to keep easy access to EU markets ...

In May 2018, the Scottish parliament passed a motion refusing to consent to the EU Withdrawal Bill, a key bill the U.K. meant to use to convert all EU law into British statute after Brexit. And while legally speaking they couldn’t block the legislation, for the British government to push it through without Scottish consent could instigate a constitutional crisis ...

LONDON — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was last week stripped of his authority over Brexit, denied a new election and abandoned by his little brother.

Now another senior minister has quit his government and the ruling Conservative Party in protest at Johnson's efforts to lead the U.K. out of the European Union on Oct. 31 with or without a deal.

Amber Rudd resigned Saturday, piling more pressure on the increasingly embattled prime minister.

Johnson expelled 21 members of his own party Tuesday after they supported an opposition plan to try to block a "no deal" Brexit ...

10. Rudd was sent 'one-page summary' of attempts to find Brexit deal
Sun Sep 8, 2019, 01:21 PM
Sep 2019

Amber Rudd said she sensationally quit the British cabinet and the Conservative party on Saturday night because there was not enough evidence of attempts to find a Brexit deal with the European Union.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, the former work and pensions secretary said she was shown a “one-page summary” when asked for evidence of Boris Johnson’s government’s work in negotiating a deal with the European Union.

She said: “I have not seen enough work going into to actually trying to get a deal. When I asked Number 10 for a summary of what the plan was for actually getting a deal, I was sent a one-page summary.”

The MP quit her post and said she was relinquishing the Tory whip after the British prime minister sacked 21 rebels this week. Mr Johnson removed the whip from two former chancellors and Winston Churchill’s grandson after they voted to give opposition MPs control of the order paper and start the process of blocking a no-deal Brexit ...
