In the event of an "accident," the girl would self-unknock-up.

No baby. No child support. It lowered the bar at the bar and helped them to "get to yes". The guys seriously didn't see a downside to this. Not only did the girls have birth control, but they had a fallback. This was back in the early '80s.

Their girlfriends had a bit of a conundrum: It was being pro-choice in order to objectify the girl and duck any responsibility. On the other hand, it was pro-choice. By and large, they would just call their guys "pigs" and continue to see them.
