Ungerrymandering The States-- One By One
The governor of New Jersey is Phil Murphy, a Democrat. Both Houses of the state legislature are controlled by Democrats, the Senate 26-14 and the Assembly 54-26. There's just one New Jersey congressional district that elected a Republican in 2018. It would be easy as pie for New Jersey Democrats to gerrymander the map to make Chris Smith's 4th CD go from an R+8 district to a much more winnable R+1 or 2 or even an even district that a Democratic candidate could easily win. And that is exactly what they were planning on doing-- until Eric Holder shamed them into not doing it (according to Eric Holder).
Today Democrats are doing what Republicans have long done-- investing millions off dollars into winning state legislative seats so that they'll have a hand in redrawing post-census district boundaries that will last for the next decade. The fight gets hot in less than two months when Virginia votes on all their legislative seats. Elliott reports that there are 91 Democratic candidates for the commonwealths 100 house races on Nov. 5, and 35 senate hopefuls for the chambers 40 spots, which include three senate districts that voted for Hillary Clinton for President in 2016 but are currently represented by Republicans. 'They are running to build the party,' house caucus executive director Trevor Southerland says."

(22,571 posts)No gerrymandering, no voter suppression.
Then came the election and Republicans showed up to vote like it was their job.
Democrats, on the other hand, didn't--nothing unusual about that though. They were either not motivated or not excited or were pissed about not getting a single payer healthcare.
The result: a total takeover of the state government by Republicans and since 2010 was a census year they got to reapportion the state in 2011 when they took power.
they gerrymandered Wisconsin to make sure that Republicans got reelected.
So ultimately, who is to blame for that?
Because when those on the Left choose to self suppress their votes, bad thing happen.
Until we learn that every election is important and not the the presidential elections we will suffer the consequences.

(9,478 posts)And since the Supreme Court has given it's stamp of approval to the WI gerrymander, I see no problem with New Jersey sticking it to the Republicans.
Republicans won't do anything until they are the ones bleeding.

(7,538 posts)If Dems ever hit a trifecta in Washington they should put bulletproof voting rights protections on their priority list.
Right is right and wrong is wrong. Democracy is about access.
