Right-Wing Network One America News Sues Rachel Maddow For Calling it ‘Paid Russian Propaganda’

The right-wing news network One America News, which counts Donald Trump among its fans, is suing MSNBC's Rachel Maddow for $10 million after she called the channel “paid Russian propaganda.” On her July 22 show, Maddow referred to a report in The Daily Beast that revealed an OAN employee also worked for state-operated Sputnik. “In this case, the most obsequiously pro-Trump right-wing news outlet in America really literally is paid Russian propaganda ... Their on-air U.S. politics reporter is paid by the Russian government to produce propaganda for that government,” Maddow said. In the lawsuit, which was reported by AP, OAN said its reporter Kristian Rouz was a freelancer for Sputnik, not an employee. In the lawsuit, Rouz stated: “I have never written propaganda, disinformation, or unverified information.” Amy Wolf, an attorney for NBCUniversal News Group, is quoted writing that OAN “publishes content collected or created by a journalist who is also paid by the Russian government.”

Turns out, freelancers get paid. If that's all they got, they already lost.

Russian interests for the money. As an American, and if I were a lawyer, I would never accept a commission to represent a Russian interest against any US citizen, but the green God is more powerful than patriotism to many, their loyalty really lies on the mighty dollar.

Some lawyers have no scruples about who pays them, as long as they get paid.

If defamation was a valid legal issue in our society today, Trump and Limbaugh would currently both deserve to be held in basement cells of Rikers Island.

"propaganda" is in the eye of the beholder. Journalistic slant could be characterized as propaganda. So in my view it would boil down to the financial aspects. They had some basis for making this claim. It's a nuisance suit IMHO.

Conservatives are far too trigger happy with suing anyone who counters their malicious propaganda. Perhaps having to consistently pay out enormous judgments, including fees, would dampen their zealotry some. Rachel is very conscientious with her sources. I also wonder if this is a ploy to out some of them. As we have seen, the Russians are deadly with those whom they see as crossing them. This will be an interesting case to follow.

Since its inception in 2013, and especially since Trump began his march to the White House, One America’s owner, Robert Herring Sr., a millionaire who made his money printing circuit boards, has directed his channel to push Trump’s candidacy, scuttle stories about police shootings, encourage antiabortion stories, minimize coverage of Russian aggression, and steer away from the new president’s troubles, according to more than a dozen current and former producers, writers and anchors, as well as internal emails from Herring and his top news executives.

Robert Herring has repeatedly shaped the news on OAN. During the campaign, for example, he banned stories about polls that showed anyone other than Trump in the lead, according to emails and interviews with OAN journalists.

In 2000, Robert Herring Sr., who is 76, sold the family’s business, Herco Technology, for $122 million. He retired and met a woman in Russia who became his third wife. An insomniac, Herring spent much of his nights watching TV. After a while, he decided to dive into the business himself.

OAN newscasts often couch the day’s events in language that reflects the owner’s point of view. One night last month, anchorman Mike Dinow introduced a story about health care like this: “In another sure sign Obamacare is on the way out . . . .” A few minutes later, Dinow started a story with this line: “The president keeps another promise, slashing regulations to a historic low.”

Do you really think MSNBC's attorneys didn't go over this with a fine toothed comb before approving it? OAN may have deep pockets but Comcast's are much deeper would be my uneducated guess.
