(82,849 posts)A lot of people don't pay very close attention to politics, certainly not like the political junkies here. But you keep a story like Trump's errant sharpie in the news for a few cycles, and some folks begin to notice. Losing 6% in his approval numbers will drive Trump even further around the bend.

(2,967 posts)The twitter memes serve a purpose. It's a new world folks, this is how it's done. It makes it harder and harder to for his supporters to support him when THEY are being laughed at too. Sooner or later A LOT of them will go silent and pretend they never really supported him. That's how they do it. They slink away and pretend it never happened.

(101,271 posts)The sharpie-altered chart only appeared on Sept 4th. So most of the polling was before that.

(16,993 posts)WTF is wrong with people?!?! Happily, the ones around here who support him have gotten strangely quiet over the past year. Ive had more conversations with people who are sick of the racism and incredible stupidity. I think the Hurricane screw up will do it for a lot of folks around here. Weve always taken hurricanes seriously and after Michael nailed us that type of bs doesnt play well at all.

(47,275 posts)disturbingly high for a president like Trump. I picture 100 random people, 38 people is over 1/3 of the group. That many people can cause a lot of chaos and destruction.
I've seen about 100 people so far today, and I didn't notice 38 of them dragging their knuckles on the ground or drooling all over themselves or wearing their underpants on their head or displaying any other signs you'd expect from anyone that abjectly stupid.
And that is even more horrifying. Like the Pod People, they often just blend right in. I've noticed people standing behind Trump at rallies and most of them look incredibly normal, though they might have been chosen because of that.
Thanks for the visual and the chuckle!

(20,135 posts)The Washington Post researched it and found that the poll he was citing was taken at CPAC. So 94% of the most hardcore right-wingers approve of him. (I assume the other 6% are the ones who dont think Trump is right-wing ENOUGH.)

(10,842 posts)Statistics can be gathered any way you want. Are you looking for accuracy, or a particular point of view? In this case, the GOP wanted a poll to shore up the rapidly leaving disillusioned conservatives. So they attended a KKK rally and found that 88% of them support DFT.
Doitnow
(1,103 posts)of course, that number looks high. It could be even higher with fewer people in the total.

(42,770 posts)Gallup. As of October 2017, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrat, 24% identified as Republican, and 42% as Independent.
If it's 88% of 24% not bad.

(18,973 posts)I have a good friend here at work, someone who I really respect and is a good person. He's an Air Force vet and a pilot. He still supports Trump, but isn't thrilled with him. We don't talk politics much at all, but he's starting to make more comments about how Trump treats people and how he's always created drama.
This guy would have voted for Hillary if Trump and the media hadn't convinced him she was guilty of all sorts of felonies.
I believe this is the voter we can flip, he's conservative, but is a decent person and is sick of Trump's immorality. He's looking to vote for someone else. But I fear that whomever the Dems nominate it will be Hillary all over again with the vilifying. They'll find some deal Warren or Biden made when selling a boat 20 years ago for 10% over market value and they'll turn that into the crime of the century.

(18,973 posts)Dude is one of the smartest people on the planet, literally. Hes an aerospace engineer and hes about the smartest person here in a building full of about a thousand aerospace engineers many of whom are MIT grads or ex NASA engineers.
He thinks for himself. Hes just pro gun, anti choice, and has a military slant on everything. And he was a wounded vet and Trump retroactively cut his taxes for his disability payments for years. He got $35K extra back in his taxes and he attributes that directly to Trump. He is the type of FOX viewer who watches Rachel Maddow once a week to try to see the other side of things.
Hes a good family man and does a ton of good in the community. He senses something is really wrong with Trump and is open to thinking. There are good people like him that whoever our candidate is needs to reach.

(18,973 posts)I'm not as liberal as many here, but I'm still more liberal than some. We have a big tent party, if our candidate can bring the promise of returning the country to some sense of normalcy he or she can get millions of Trump voters to support him or her.
I cringe when threads here seem to be centered around purity tests of our candidates. We have a ton of great candidates, some less liberal than others, every one of them would save the Republic if elected because the Republic is not going to survive another Trump term.

(42,770 posts)career. There are SO many who are fiscally conservative and social liberal. They would never think of denying civil rights or telling women they can't decide on abortion, for instance.
Yet their livelihoods depend on businesses, their clients, their banks thriving. I firmly believe that IF we put up a more centrist candidate, we can win them over. Unfortunately, I also believe that a very progressive candidate will scare them into holding their noses and re-electing Dipshit.

(82,849 posts)Make sure your good friend gets some tidbits about the reprehensibility of the Trump administration. If he's open-minded enough to watch Rachel Maddow, you can feed him little morsels of information. You don't have to be doctrinaire or overbearing, but passing comments about some stupidity or other perpetrated by Trump or his administration will give him something to digest.

(18,973 posts)This is a high integrity person who was an officer in the Air Force. He knows all about protocols for flying into airports and refueling. This will stink to high heaven to him as he's likely been on flights like these ones.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)But yeah, a simple side comment like, "Boy, somebody's going to have his turn in the barrel for that Scotland thing. Why would someone think that was a good idea?" Your friend will probably be able to fill in the blanks: Someone thought it was a good idea because Trump is always open to any idea that puts more coin in his pocket.
