Newt Gingrich says he plans to "go to the NAACP convention and tell the African-American community why they should demand paychecks instead of food stamps."
Gingrich made the comments during a town hall in Plymouth, New Hampshire, according to a tweet from Slate writer Dave Weigel.
Gingrich has repeatedly referred to President Barack Obama as a "food stamp president", and has said he'd tackle black teen unemployment by easing child labor laws so that poor kids can work as janitors in their schools, replacing union workers.
He has also said that children in poor neighborhoods have no role models for work, and no concept of getting paid, unless it's for something illegal. He has proposed turning school children from poor neighborhoods into apprentice school janitors, replacing union workers.
A 2009 study found that 1 in 8 Americans, and 1 in 4 children -- of all races -- received food assistance, in the wake of the 2007 recession. The study found that 28 percent of blacks, 15 percent of Hispanics, and 8 percent of whites, received food assistance that year.

"Most?" Um...not even close. I would say that the US population is around 60% White so Whites underrepresent all welfare cases. Doesn't that just make common sense, given the disparity in net worth in our country? D'oh!

White, Non-Hispanic Participants = 32.2%
Black, Non-Hispanic Participants = 22.5%
Hispanic Participants = 15.5%
Asian, Native American, and Other = the remainder

(28,017 posts)Have they no clue that blacks and hispanics vote? That their numbers are rising? That other immigrants like Chinese and other asian groups are watching this shit and going, "wow, I wonder when I will be attacked based on my facial features and skin color."
I was very young, but I still recall President Kennedy's comments about the anti integration movements in the South. He was applauding them, not because he supported their racism, but because they made his case for him. They were so crazy and off the wall that by the time Johnson picked up the ball and sought to pass that legislation, the opposition was too embarrassed to say boo. I also recall that most of the worst miscreants and shitheels were southern democrats. Racism 'r Us, could have been their motto.
There is some of that going on here. The GOP of today is so fucking nuts, especially their leadership and their candidates, that the rest of America has to be thinking, How the HELL did these guys get where they are, and why are they still here?

(13 posts)Nor are all WP. Of course this is most likely a dog whistle but you could look at it like this: perhaps Newt was saying he's gonna provide work for people so they don't HAVE to be on stamps. What I find distasteful is that he called Obama the "food stamp President." That sounds designed to link (pardon the pun) Obama as a Black man to welfare. The only reason so many are on food stamps is because of what occurred BEFORE!!!!

(14,180 posts)chance that one of his listeners is receiving food stamps. Likewise, there is roughly a 1-5 chance that one of his listeners knows someone receiving food stamps. I'm not an expert in statistics but I would speculate this means a 2-5 chance (or 40%) that any given listener is either receiving food stamps or knows someone who is.
For DU statisticians, I apologize if I've mis-stated the probability here.

A patent unquestioning disregard that reflects a deep seeded but not explicit belief in a natural social order of oppression. I think it is a sincere belief that they are being generous and helpful.
It's an implicit belief that provides someone to use the "some of my best friends are black" line while supporting institutional racism.

I now live in South Central Los Angeles due to my low level of income. The area is full of genuinely good people but as a community it is in dire need of help (I'm just visiting so I'm of course not truly qualified to speak for anyone, but I do wish for a higher level of everything good out here). I volunteer to take Newtie on a nice, friendly tour of South Central so he can meet the people he is addressing, and so THEY can present to him, questions and observations which may bring to Newt a certain level of enlightenment. I believe that would be interesting and educational for everyone. Get in touch with me Newt, we'll take the walking tour and after that, go to skid row downtown for more enlightenment. Don't forget to bring jobs for everyone so everyone can start demanding paychecks!

(13 posts)It's maddening when people state that WP make up MOST of the recipients. BP make up 12% of the population and represent 39% of all welfare cases. So they overrepresent their group by 3X. Whites underrepresent their group (make up less than 60% of all those receiving welfare) and Hispanics supposedly slightly underrepresent their group.
It is silly to use RAW NUMBERS to try and obfuscate this issue. BP on average have a net worth of 5k while Whites have over 100K! We know that unemployment and poverty are much greater in the Black community so why muddy the waters and claim that they don't receive more welfare???

(23,796 posts)In the book, King articulated a Keynesian, demand-side critique of the American marketplace. He argued, "We have so energetically mastered production that we now must give attention to distribution." Unless working Americans and the poor were able to obtain good jobs and increase their purchasing power--their ability to pump money back into the economy--it would be sapped of its dynamism. "We must create full employment or we must create incomes," King wrote. "People must be made consumers by one method or the other."
King criticized Johnson's War on Poverty for being too piecemeal. While housing programs, job training and family counseling were not themselves unsound, he wrote that "all have a fatal disadvantage. The programs have never proceeded on a coordinated basis.... At no time has a total, coordinated and fully adequate program been conceived."
Rather than continuing with "fragmentary and spasmodic reforms," King advocated that the government provide full employment. "We need to be concerned that the potential of the individual is not wasted," he wrote. "New forms of work that enhance the social good will have to be devised for those for whom traditional jobs are not available."
That is what Newt is talking about, right?
OnionPatch
(6,169 posts)"should demand a paycheck WITH A LIVING WAGE"
My mother worked her ass off, full time in a factory but it was not enough to support her family. She was eligible for food stamps, as are most of the people who work at places like WalMart, etc. So, yes, people (not just African Americans) should demand a livable wage. Most would prefer that over food stamps. (I don't think Newt really believes that, though.)
