It was the terrorists piloting them. A "sentient airplane" has yet to be invented.

That passive "things happened" framing is an all-too-common feature of modern mainstream journalism.

The New York Times states that "planes" took aim at the world trade center towers, not that terrorists piloted the planes into the towers.
Planes were the weapons terrorists used to kill more than 3,000 people. Planes did not kill of their own accord, planes are not sentient beings.
