(101,716 posts)when Eliot Richardson, William Ruckelshaus, John Dean (in particular) and several others stood up to and/or testified against him. Even some of his most staunch supporters ultimately told the truth (e.g., exposing existence of tapes, etc.)

(25,183 posts)between those serving in the Nixon administration, and those willing to work for Trump. Please recall, back then, we had GOP Senators with the balls to tell Tricky Dick that the jig was up. We have no such statesmen in the GOP today.
hlthe2b
(101,716 posts)R's were so honorable in going to the WH to tell Nixon it was time to go, is just that. They waited until they had NO choice. That "statesman" thing is bullshit.
Howard Baker and a few R's did show some spine in the hearings. But, John Dean committed crimes for Nixon. In that aspect, he is not that different than Cohen, though a better "man" in general certainly.
murielm99
(30,656 posts)I lived through it and was a Watergate junkie. If they could have gotten away with their corruption, Nixon would have finished his term. When I tell people this, many of them look at me like I am nuts. They did not suddenly "see the light!"
Remember, the Democrats were in power then, and so the checks and balances were working.
I read Dean's book and watched his testimony faithfully. I think he worked with lawyers to save his own butt and not to sound self-serving. He did some jail time. He is a better man because he had a trial by fire. He learned to be a better man because he was forced to look at himself and answer for his crimes. Maybe that will happen for Cohen. We will see.
customerserviceguy
(25,183 posts)but in comparison to Trump's lackeys, they sort of look like that, maybe, through a looking-glass with forty-five years of dust on it.

(56,827 posts)for the week afterwards, it went down several points before the next distractions and scandals buried that story and Trump and the media continuing to promote the economy as great led to a rebound.
Sadly, my fear is that big testimony from the likes of Cohen, Mueller and others will be so scattered across the months that it will be ineffectual and forgotten

(784 posts)What is a proffer agreement?
asiliveandbreathe
(8,203 posts)Proffer or "queen for a day" letters are written agreements between federal prosecutors and individuals under criminal investigation which permit these individuals to tell the government about their knowledge of crimes, with the supposed assurance that their words will not be used against them in any later proceedings.
Cohen has nothing to lose.....

(12,448 posts)But apart from that, being put in prison while the real perp is holding rallies, stuffing his face with junk food, and profiting off the presidency tends to focus the mind. Cohen is probably stewing angrily about the unfairness of it. Sure, he deserves jail time, but Donald Trump deserves it even more.
I hope he's angry enough to tell all. I have a feeling he is.

(7,788 posts)the same that we heard in front of congress, then he's given nothing. He said Trump is a racist, a misogynist, and a cheat. We knew all that already. He HAS to know a lot more about Russia and the 2016 election and obstruction and Flynn than we've heard him talk about. He's playing a con. He said he'd take a bullet for Trump and he is.
First rule when interpreting GOP confessions: if they confess to anything it's because the whole truth is much worse.
Believing that a life of threats, bullying, deceit, greed, and ambition suddenly changes in the light of day is a stretch. Almost like believing that a self centered, corrupt, immoral, greedy narcissist will give all that up and work for the greater good when elected president. Doesn't happen. Didn't happen.
