Deferred Deportation for children (and adults) who are receiving life saving medical treatment

has been a policy of US immigration for years. About a month ago DHS sent out a form letter telling them that the eliminating that program and the sick kids (and adults) had to cease their medical treatment and leave the country in the next 33 days.

The Doctors treating them say that most of them will die if they stop their treatments. The medications and treatment are not available in their home country. It is like a death sentence. One 24 year old female suffers from a very rare condition where her body doesn't produce an enzyme she needs to live. When she was seven years old and with only a year or 2 to live a Dr. in the US invited her to come to the US to participate in some experimental trials on a cure for her condition. The Dr.'s problem was that her condition was so rare that he couldn't find enough patients to do his experiments. Then he found this little girl and brought her to the US.

The treatment worked but she has to have injections of the enzyme very often. If she doesn't get her enzyme injections she will die. Another young boy has cystic fibrosis and if he doesn't get treatment continually he will die.

There is no way to know how many people are in this deferred program because the Trump admin. has been totally silent about this program or their plans to terminate it.

Some of the parents took their letters about having to leave the country in 33 days to attorneys, the media, and their Congressmen. The House oversight Committee put this issue at the top of their agenda yesterday and held hearings with at least 2 of the patients testifying and giving heart wrenching testimony about not wanting to die and if they were sent back to their home country treatment would not be available and they would die. Their Doctors said it would be a death warrant.

As might be expected some of the Republicans on the Oversight Committee just poo pood their testimony. The ranking minority leader Republican Jim Jordan (as usual without a coat or jacket) almost climbed on the dias and was castigating the witnesses and saying this was all theater and staged by the Democrats. This was even though the Committee had been given copies of the letters from DHS saying they had to leave US in 33 days.

Republican Mark Meadows kind of laughed and said this is silly and you kids don't have anything to worry about because the United States would never order deportation of patients, children or adults, who were on life saving medication or treatments. And this is the US and we would never do that. So there was nothing to worry about.

But the 33 days are up this coming Saturday and the parents or the patients have not received anything from the government changing the letter ordering them to leave.

Makes you proud to be an American doesn't it?
