Help me understand why E-cigarettes and being regulated and certain ones banned?

2. We have no idea what vaping does yet

These are chemicals, mostly from China, that haven't been tested or studied. This needs to be regulated.

And people die from long term use of cigarettes, people are dying from short term use of E-cigarettes right now because there are contaminated ingredients going around.

It's the difference between regulating pain killers and pulling aspirin off the shelf because they have been found to contain poison. Several hundred people have been sickened in recent weeks with serious issues. This isn't chronic use problem over a period of time, this is a foreign substance got into the supply and is killing people.

7. NO THEY ARE NOT DYING FROM SHORT TERM USE OF E-CIGARETTES

They are dying from buying and using COUNTERFEIT THC cartridges, where the THC is cut with Vitamin E, which is an oil that destroys lung tissue, sold on the street.

NOTHING TO DO WHATSOEVER with vaping nicotine. These deaths are from POT.

Errr ... of course not literally pot ... but it's even more unfair to say 'e-cigarettes'.

And while it's not uncommon to get e-juice with ingredients sourced from China, these deaths and injuries have nothing to do with Chinese contaminants. The 'killer cut' is coming from US companies.

And these so called 'chemicals' you refer to with nicotine vaping ... are food-grade vegetable glycerin (so safe you can enema with it), Rx-grade propylene glycol (used in asthma inhalers and to purify air in hospitals), Rx-grade nicotine (sourced from US tobacco), and various food-grade flavorings, generally US-made.

All are 100% water-soluble, as the proper, real vaping industry has known for YEARS you cannot safely vape any oils.

There's no big mystery about what's in vape juice and many brands use 100% US products, some even use organic ones.

You're spreading fear and nonsense, no offense.

12. Right. PG and VG are two of the most ubiquitous and recognized as non-toxic 'chemicals'

as there are in this world. The tech to make them is exceptionally cheap and perfected like 100 freaking years ago.

They are ANYTHING but 'unknown'. Granted we don't know what the combination of PG/VG/Nicotine/Random food flavors might do to one's lungs over decades, very true.

But we DO KNOW what smoking will do to your lungs and body, and we DO KNOW there's 100+ carcinogens in every puff, vs. 0 known carcinogens in a hit from a nicotine vape.

3. All I know is that some scientists think there is an ingredient in SOME

vaping products (something like Vitamin E acetate), predominantly in marijuana type products, that may be causing severe respiratory illness. From what I've read, it's not the well known vaping products or e cigs. Last I saw, six people have died, quite a few ill.

that, for some reason, there is a tendency towards rather hysterical reactions to even minor events as well as knee-jerk, false equivalencies, etc.

My policy is to look at it that way and not get on the bandwagon while awaiting more sound information on a situation. Maybe it is the herd instinct or just the bleed and lead emphasis that modern media goes by, or other factors as well?

That is often how the real witch hunts of old and some historical debacles began, as well. Sometimes it can do much more harm than good and being prone to too much fear about things can make us more vulnerable and our own imagination can get stirred up easily, which might be something to discourage.

It might be a good idea, sometimes, to err on the side of caution, but in some situations it is absurd, considering how many possible dangers we might encounter everyday and in unexpected ways, yet we prevail.

On Friday, federal health officials announced the number of possible severe lung illness cases tied to vaping liquids had more than doubled to encompass more than 450 people in 33 states and the Virgin Islands. The outbreak is characterized by severe pneumonia symptoms, shortness of breath, coughing, fever, fatigue, and respiratory failure — sometimes severe enough to require artificial respiration — and has so far affected mostly young people. The reports all started from a handful of cases in two states, Wisconsin and Illinois, announced at the end of July. Five people have died.

On Thursday, the New York State health department announced that Vitamin E acetate, an oily chemical found in some foods and lotion, was “now a key focus” of its investigation into the 34 cases in its state, after it turned up in at least one vape product inhaled by each patient.

The FDA’s Zeller pushed back against that conclusion a day later, suggesting that multiple chemicals found in vaping liquids were under investigation. But red herring or not, the finding solidified the leading theory about what is going on: A culprit chemical added to THC-containing vaping liquids that triggers an inflammatory response in the lungs, leading to scarring and other symptoms.
