Stanford prison experiment mastermind whose work explores the psychology of cruelty: America under Trump is a nightmare situation
snip of article:
On impulse, Trump will call a foreign leader and say, Hey, why dont we meet rather than having his staff set a formal meeting. He has a meeting, and nothing is accomplished. Of course, Trump then says it was a fantastic meeting. Everything is better than it really is. We could be on the brink of war with Iran. His tariffs with China are catastrophic, with profoundly negative consequences for American farmers. His egocentric wall will cost billions of dollars.
It doesnt matter to him. Donald Trump is a great danger to American society and the world.
The other aspect of great concern regarding Trump is that present hedonists are prone to addiction. For Trump its tweets. Hes getting up at all hours of the day and night to send out tweets. Many of them dont make sense. Many of them are filled with spelling and grammatical errors.
How does Donald Trumps present moment hedonism factor into his pattern of being credibly accused of sexual assault and harassment by numerous women?
Present hedonists are always seeking pleasure of all kinds. For Trump it is sexual pleasure. Obviously, he overeats. Hes obese. That pattern cant be broken.
Donald Trump is symbolic of the terrible things that are happening about freedom, justice and liberty around the world with the rise of right-wing authoritarianism.
The Trump regime, as planned by White House adviser Stephen Miller, has implemented a nationwide strategic plan of terror against migrant, refugee and immigrant communities. This escalation is barbaric.
The last time weve seen such a thing at the national level was in Nazi Germany. This is exactly what happened. In Nazi Germany they began by labeling Jews as vermin, having images of Jews as rats. This is the same thing as Donald Trump saying these migrants are filthy, dirty, criminals, drug addicts and drug dealers. Again, this is stereotyping a whole group of people in order to dehumanize them.

(3,299 posts)Perhaps the methodology is suspect.
I've spent considerable time working in jails, the more often i went, and the more frequently i saw the same poorly trained and educated guards, the more abusively I was treated. Often, I had to remind them, that I wasn't one of their prisoners, and didn't have to take their abuse.
I've seen similar developments at security checkpoints in courthouses, and at airports by TSA security personnel. The personnel at these facilities also become abusive over time without proper training and supervision.

(2,195 posts)it is a "fraud". The cite says as much. The reality of what happened is very true.

(13,485 posts)Zimbardo's own words, "So it doesn't fit the standards of what it means to be "an experiment." It's a very powerful demonstration of a psychological phenomenon, and it has had relevance."
There is relevance in this psychological phenomenon that is historic and is found in the experience of many. It deserves proper study but we can't dismiss human flaws because an experiment was flawed. I don't get the impression you're going there though.

(5,013 posts)He's part of the reason I stopped being a member of the American Psychological Association (he was President when 9-11 Happened). He's got some mild Trump characteristics which makes his analysis of him somewhat ironic.

(63,803 posts)this is cult we are dealing with and constant gas lighting of the public they would believe everything he says. Denial too, even if their daily lives are being messed up they would still support this POS, unless they realize that they have been conned by a BS'er.
For example, Farmers livelihoods are diminishing from the tariffs and countries are going elsewhere to do their business. They are feeling the wrath of this idiot.

Farmer's livelihoods dimminishing is so misunderstood and the damage underestimated. As difficilt as it is now and will be in the near future the long-range is even more bleak. Does anyone really think the markets are just going to bounce back to Americans when the tRump nightmare is over? I do not. Once new markets are established in other countries like Russia, China and elsewhere our credibility will have been destroyed and we won't be the go to source any longer.
