President Donald Trump's top advisers are rushing to find an escape hatch for a series of tariff increases in the coming months, worried about the potential for further economic damage.
Many of the president's top economic officials are trying to resurrect the terms they previously were negotiating with China, a deal officials said was "90 percent" done before a sudden impasse this summer, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
That approach was rejected by the Chinese at the time, so it's unclear whether the new effort will overcome those hurdles and deliver U.S.-sought commitments from China on agriculture, intellectual property and technology transfer.
The goal of the internal administration discussions is to forestall October tariff increases and the next tariffs set to take effect in December, with some advisers arguing that the economic hit is real and must be mitigated prior to the election year. But the discussions remain fluid and Trump has yet to endorse an approach.

(14,490 posts)we've all suffered negative effects. Some say around a grand per citizen this year and close to double that next year. Christmas sales will suffer and farmers are hitting the rails.
How he can try to paint this as a win is anyone's guess, but we can bet he will......
Oh, and China does not give a shit.

(11,949 posts)They come from a 3000 year old culture. While trump focuses on next week or at best November 2020, the Chinese think decades ahead.
They are getting the agricultural commodities they need at a good price from South America and Russia. And more and more of the things they make for us are finished in 3rd countries not affected by his tariffs.
His very nature offends their culture and they are going to fuck him sideways.
They will be tempted to make a deal with him because within 6 months he will be willing to give away the store to help with his re-election. But they wont because they know if he gets a second term he will immediately go back on the deal. Because they plan ahead.

(10,270 posts)What I suspect without knowing a damn thing about formal macroECON, is that the Christmas numbers will be ok, and everything will hold until spring....and then when peeps decide they can't afford a vacation this summer, the numbers drops will start to happen...just in time for summer general election campaigns to kick into high gear.
Donald Trump will die in prison.
