It's a kick-pleat - a common feature on long coats and skirts, and it serves a function. "Seeing" something nefarious here is beyond ridiculous.

The kick-pleat has been top-stitched (in white or grey here) along its edges, which also serves a purpose. It keeps the pleat from folding in on itself, and reinforces the fabric at stress points to prevent tearing during wear.

seen by a LOT of people before she went out in public, and someone should have noticed and considered how it could look to others--especially since she has been known to troll with the back of her coat.

I had a denim coat with the kick-pleat top-stitched in red, and a black trenchcoat with the pleat top-stitched in white.

Maybe no one pointed out to Melania that her kick-pleat could be construed as a plane flying into a tower because it's a totally ridiculous notion - just like 'seeing' the Virgin Mary on your pancake.

If you notice, all of the topstitching on that coat is in the contrasting color thread. Not a thing in the world unusual about that.

for giving me the name - kick pleat. I was making the point on another thread that this is a fairly common feature, but I couldn’t think of the name kick pleat.

It's a kick-pleat, which is a common feature on long skirts and coats. This one happens to be top-stitched in a contrasting shade - also not uncommon.

You're right - it's not random. It's functional.

Not sure what the difficulty is.

Others on another thread were saying it’s a zipper. Who needs a zipper on the back of the coat?

But who needs a coat right now? It is way warm for a coat like that. She must get very cold very easily.

But the discussion and all the print about the coat is bullshit that does nothing to help our causes, it is all just petty bullshit that is playing into Trump's hands.
