I don't watch all the news channels but I usually catch the Nightly News. They covered the story nicely.
It sounds like ID theft, and they probably aren't smart enough to avoid getting caught.

It was kind of chilling. One of the points mentioned was that having your paycheck direct deposited also implied the possibility of direct withdrawal. Made me wonder if I should set up another bank account to accept my paycheck by direct deposit, then immediately transfer it to my regular bank account and limit any loss to the hundred bucks or so I keep in the placeholder account.

You can usually do that online because most banks offer online services now.
Then if the company that has your info tries to steal something, it's only a few bucks. They won't know your savings account info.
