When Medicare for All came to Australia (1983)

Public Information Ad for enrollment in Medicare in Australia. The man behind the desk, was the then Labour PM, Bob Hawke. Medicare was, and is, regarded as the greatest achievement of his government.

pay out-of-pocket or purchase private insurance similar to our Medicare supplement policies.

That's not what Medicare-for-All -- as envisioned by a few Democratic candidates here -- will entail.

I don't think many physicians, or even hospitals, in this country would accept the payment rates that Australia covers.


In fact, if our candidates were proposing something like Australia's system, I'd feel much better about the ultimate cost.
