Melania Trump to attend reopening of Washington Monument

First lady Melania Trump plans to be on hand for the reopening of the Washington Monument.

The iconic landmark in the nation's capital is poised to open to the public on Sep. 19. The obelisk, which first opened in 1888, had been closed for more than three years for upgrades.

The first lady is set to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the National Park Service on Thursday, her press office announced Friday. She will also embark on a ceremonial ride to the top of the 555-foot tall structure.

The monument has faced multiple repairs over the years, including after it suffered significant damage following a 2011 earthquake in Virginia. The latest repairs were to modernize its elevator system and to create a new security screening facility.
