...by trying to INDICT a former FBI Director for opening a legitimate investigation into his behavior. It was an act of political retribution designed to intimidate the FBI into ignoring criminal activity by the President. Once the FBI and the Department of Justice are tools of the President, that's it. We're officially a Putin-style kleptocracy, with a democratic facade. He was stopped only by the common sense of a dozen regular citizens on a Grand Jury. Every other civilized political guard rail has failed. This is the biggest Constitutional crisis since the Civil War.
And the goddamn media spends the entire day obsessing over whether Felicity Fucking Hoffman will get a month in prison!?

(19,201 posts)they're in the business of providing news. All sorts of news. It's up to the viewer to differentiate what's important and what's not. Politics boor some people to tears. Other's, like we at DU, find it the only course a citizen of our country should take. It doesn't make us better, just more concerned with everyone's well being, and not merely our own. That said, everyone should strive to be more like US!

But unlike Felicity, Ms. Mason is not wealthy or a celebrity or white.
FIVE YEARS IN JAIL FOR CASTING A VOTE. Think about that the next time some candidate talks about justice and prison reform being essential.
Rapists, drug dealers and wife-beaters serve less time. And white high school boys who sexually-assault young women get breaks from white judges because they are "good boys" from "good families" and are graduating to go to "good schools."

(4,341 posts)If we were McCabe would have been indicted, and because we are not in a dictatorship it didn't happen.
Do you think that if McCabe had been in Russia that he would be walking free today? He most probably would have been executed, same if it happened in North Korea.
We are far from a dictatorship and we must refuse any thought that we are, that would be giving up, I refuse to give up.

(4,341 posts)I just read a bunch of defeatist posts some times, and I refuse to give up, but that small change you made is perfect. Kleptocracy is as bad as a dictatorship because the level of corruption is 100 fold, that is what is happening in countries like Venezuela, the efforts of the kleptocracy is linear, all they want to do is fill their coffers and ruin the country, all infrastructure, all industry goes on the wayside and destruction is rampant. Lets hope we don't go there, but we as citizens must not give up, we must not allow it.
I have confidence that we will not allow it, the the powers that be will not let it happen.

(21,565 posts)i think executive branch control of the DOJ needs to go away. The AG should become a nationally election position and the election of the AG should be every 2 years (maybe with term limits too?). So you don't get hacks like Bill Barr in there appointed by a corrupt president and approved by his party's senate. That's just to start. Basically you can't have the president in charge of determining whether he is a criminal or not and controlling who gets to decide.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)The problem would be every time there was a President of one party and an AG of another, it would be nonstop investigations, grand juries or indictments of the entire cabinet. It would also typically be someone with their own eye on being the next president.

Meanwhile Huffington, who deserves to be punished for her corrupted morals and financially dealings, will probably see more jail time than Mike Flynn (who is a traitor!) and all the members of his cabinet, Barr, and a zillion other sycophants around the fucking moron combined.

In my view, that is sufficient unto itself to justify impeachment.

(1,733 posts)Of all the tell-all Trump books, I found McCabe's the most eye-opening. Today's FBI is no longer Hoover's political weapon. The book is a serious explanation of the rigor and judicial review it takes conduct an investigation of anything, let alone something as important as the Russian probe.
I've read all the big Trump books. The other one that may tell you something you don't already know is Michael Lewis's The Fifth Risk.
Just suggestion.

(1,587 posts)have been taking on the road to a fascist dictatorship. It is the ignoring of this steady journey l find the media guilty of. It has chosen to almost criminally abandon its patriotic responsibility and professional integrity in many cases in exchange for useless superficial trivia. They have yet to present the big picture to the voting public, and it is scary as hell when they refuse to use the term demagogue even when they know it is applicable.

He wants power, he needs power, he won't stop until all sections of the government bow down to him and mindlessly follow his dictates. Then the great unwashed out there will see the full Power of his Mind! And it won't be pretty . . .
Somebody stop him! And soon! Many methods avail themselves, and the rest of the world won't mind too much how it's done. As long as it gets done. SOON.

(13,583 posts)way since I was a kid in the 70's. If it's known that anyone in a government position is sneaking around meeting with Russians, I damn well want the FBI, CIA or whatever, right up their butts 24/7! If it wasn't republicans in cahoots with the Russki's, conservatives would feel the same way. They'd be even more fired up about it than we are if the shoe was on the other foot.
Now we have a president, members of Congress, the NRA and a host of others being played by Putin and his goons.
