Bahamas braces for Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, Storm Humberto

Parts of the Bahamas, still digging out from the ravages of Hurricane Dorian that has left 1,300 missing, were bracing Friday for a likely new tropical storm that could bring damaging winds and heavy rain.

As of 2 p.m. EDT, the center of the new system was about 190 miles east southeast of Great Abaco Island with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. Tropical storm warnings were issued for the northwestern Bahamas, including Grand Bahama Island.

The disturbance became Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine on Thursday afternoon. If the storm system reaches sustained winds of at least 39 mph, it will become Tropical Storm Humberto.

The storm is expected to produce total rain accumulations in the Bahamas of 2 to 4 inches through Sunday and up to 6 inches in some areas, according to the National Hurricane Center.

This has moved East and is not likely to be a tropical storm before it turns around and heads east into the Atlantic.
