LONDON (AP) Thieves have stolen a solid gold toilet worth up to 1 million pounds ($1.25 million) from the birthplace of British wartime leader Winston Churchill.
The toilet, the work of Italian conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan, had been installed only two days earlier at Blenheim Palace, west of London, after previously being shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Police said the toilet was taken early Saturday by thieves who used at least two vehicles. Because the golden toilet had been connected to the palace's plumbing system, police said its removal caused "significant damage and flooding" to the building, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A 66-year-old man was arrested, but the toilet was not recovered.

SOLID GOLD???? What does the artist think Winnie's shit was made of?

(58,785 posts)that that lowers its value to meltdown, apparently some art value to some. The damage to Blenheim is more significant, and President Donnie's and wife's desire to use a solid gold toilet more interesting in its disgustingly depraved way.

(4,554 posts)If the entire $1.25 mil was only in the metal value itself, the toilet could have weighed only about 70 lbs (at current gold prices), far too light for solid gold in that apparent amount. I'm thinking maybe gold plated(?).

(4,554 posts)toilet is heavy - and a solid gold toilet would be about eight times heavier (assuming similar construction). Now, the walls of the gold toilet may be thinner than ordinary and, the gold is apparently only 18 carat (not quite as dense as 24 carat) but still...
As well I saw a report that the value of the thing is five rather than one million $ so maybe there is in fact enough gold there to be accurately described as "solid" gold.
