Many conservative radio programs, conservative websites, conservative organizations etc. offer these horrible books "written" by these horrible authors as a "premium" for joining, contributing etc. They'll get the books for free, but every book they get for free counts as a "sale" so these horrible assholes are billed as "New York Times Bestsellers". If they only counted Amazon and Book Store sales these books would - as you say - be "relegated to the 99 cent bin almost immediately." It's a shame they get best-seller credentials this way, but that's the age we live in.
