There's nothing so trustworthy as the ordinary mind of the ordinary man.

That was on the banner in the home of Lonesome Rhodes in A Face In The Crowd.

This statement defines why we are where Trump is where he is. He has validated a significant segment of the population which is (to quote Lonesome Rhodes) "stupider than I am and therefore I have to think for them!"

Mostly because trust is the last thing I would feel for what passes for an ordinary mind in the present charged atmosphere of hate.

The Death of Expertise it's by Tom Nichols a never-Trumper, but the title is something I've thought about for a while.
